Kamiakin’s 6-foot-9 senior breaks school’s 32-year scoring record
After Kyson Rose realized what he had done Tuesday night, the big, 6-foot-9 Kamiakin senior sat down on his team’s bench and started tearing up.
“Since my freshman year, I’ve been coming to the gym at 6 a.m.,” Rose said the day after he set a school record by scoring 46 points in a 93-68 boys basketball victory over visiting Hanford. “I’m still in shock about it.”
Rose set the record on a 20-for-35 shooting performance from the floor, and a 6-for-7 performance at the free throw line.
He added 17 rebounds for good measure, all done in just 25 minutes of play.
What’s it like to score that many points in a game?
“I don’t know. I still couldn’t tell you,” Rose said. “On my 38th point, to be honest, Trey (Arland) passed me the ball and I tossed it up and it went in. The last few games have felt like that.”
Rose said his teammates all did a great job getting him the ball.
At a certain point, when a guy is hot, everyone knows it and everyone wants to get that guy the ball.
“At the end of the first quarter, I think I had 15 points,” said Rose. “As we came out of the huddle, my point guard (Steven Westermeyer) said ‘We’re getting you 60 tonight.’”
And so, everyone began feeding him the ball.
Rose’s output beat the previous record of 40, held by Heath Dolven, who held the record since 1988.
Dolven was in the stands, watching his record fade away.
“I got to meet him after the game,” said Rose. “It was an honor to meet him, and I told him I was sorry. He said ‘No. No. That’s all right.”
Messiah Jones added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Kamiakin, while Arland had 12 points and 5 assists, as the Braves have now won five in a row.
Hudson Shupe led Hanford with 22 points, while Riley Nighswonger added 21.
The victory keeps the Braves apace with Walla Walla for second place in the Mid-Columbia Conference standings. Both teams are 8-2 in MCC play.
Chiawana still leads the MCC standings with a 10-0 mark.
CHIAWANA 89, RICHLAND 61: The host Riverhawks exploded in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bombers 32-13 en route to a big win.
Landyn Cantu had a big game for Chiawana, scoring 30 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the 3-point line.
Taylor Perez and Connor Mendez each added 17 points as Chiawana stayed unbeaten.
Nathan Daniels led Richland with 16 points.
PASCO 74, HERMISTON 58: Ethan Legard scored 36 points to lead visiting Pasco to its second MCC win of the season. Chase Elliott led the Bulldogs with 24 points.
Great side note: Tuesday night was the first time in 10 years that every Pasco boys team — varsity, junior varsity, C team and freshman team — won on the same night.
WALLA WALLA 84, SOUTHRIDGE 46: Michael Cornia scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Wa-Hi to the win. Teammate Dylan Ashbeck added 12 points and 12 boards. Tristan Smith led the Suns with 25 points.

• Kennewick’s Ler Pweh Htoo won the 113-pound title, as did teammate Chayc Ottum at 220, to lead the Lions to a second-place team finish at the Clearwater Classic in Idaho.
