State champion Chiawana wrestlers continue their domination
Chiawana wrestling continues to roll over the opposition this season.
The defending 4A state champions took the team title and four individual championships at the always tough Inland Empire tournament at Central Valley High School in Spokane Valley.
Riverhawks who won their weight titles are Por Htoo at 106 pounds, Robby Vaughn at 152, Tyson Stover at 182, and Isaiah Anderson at 195.
The marquee title match of the day may have been at 160 pounds, where Pasco’s Isaiah Gonzales beat Chiawana’s Darion Johnson 3-1 for the victory.
• Meanwhile, five Mid-Columbians won individual championships at the recent Leonard Schutte Invitational in Othello.
Host Othello had two champs: Jaxon Rocha at 145 pounds and Elijah Roylance at 285.
Pasco’s Victor Godinez won the 120-pound title, while Richland’s Brian Quintana was the 113-pound champ, and Royal’s Mark Martinez took the 160-pound championship.
• At the Warden Girls Invitational this past weekend, Hanford won the team title with 199 points, while Pasco was second with 148.
Hanford had individual champions in 105-pounder Taylor Wilson and Hailey Say at 145.
Pasco also had two champions: Jazmin Mercado at 130 pounds, and Justice Sanchez at 115.
The Asselin sisters of Kennewick accounted for two titles and a second-place finish.
Alexia Asselin won the 190-pound title, while Ayanna Asselin pinned her sister Aubreanna in 1:36 for the 170-pound championship.
Other area champions include Chiawana’s Alanna Haney at 125, Othello’s Emily Mendez at 110, and Walla Walla’s Annelise Whitaker at 140.
• Sunnyside and Pasco went 1-2 respectively at the Eastmont Ladycat Classic on Dec. 7, with each school boasting two weight class champions.
Sunnyside’s Alexxus Ramos (110 pounds) and Cheyann Rendon (155) earned titles, as did Pasco’s Sofia Correa (120) and Mariah Hinojosa (105).
Prosser’s Keiden Espinoza (100 pounds) and Hermiston’s Jazmin Deike (190) also won titles.
• The latest Washington Wrestling Report state rankings, produced by Dave Gilbertson, are out.
In Class 4A, Chiawana has the top team, while Sunnyside is second.
Area wrestlers who are ranked at the top of their weight classes are the following: Chiawana’s Isaiah Anderson (195) and Tyson Stover (182); Sunnyside’s Andrew Macias (138); and Pasco’s Isaiah Gonzales (160).
Gonzales leads a trio at 160 from this region. Walla Walla sophomore Jakob Humphrey is ranked second, while Chiawana’s Darion Johnson is third.
Chiawana’s Robby Vaughn is ranked second at 152 pounds, while Sunnyside’s Austin Villanueva is third.
Two other Sunnyside wrestlers — Elijah Barajas at 106, and EJ Villanueva at 126 — are ranked second in their weight classes, while Hanford’s Austin Patton is third at 120.
• Kamiakin’s Gilbert Marquez, at 195 pounds, is the lone area wrestler ranked atop his weight class in the Class 3A rankings.
Hermiston’s Trevor Wagner gets the No. 2 nod at 170 pounds, while teammate Sam Cadenas is third at 220. Kamiakin’s Joey Chavez is ranked third at 160.
• Connell’s Jesus Ramos is ranked No. 1 at 182 pounds in the 1A rankings.
The following are ranked third in their respective weight classes: Kiona-Benton’s Keaton Covington (152), Warden’s Cael Cox (120) and Holden Haworth (160), and Royal’s Dominic Martinez (138).
Boys basketball
Here are the Mid-Columbia Conference boys basketball standings after Tuesday night’s games: Chiawana and Richland both at 2-0 MCC play and 5-0 overall; Kennewick tied with them at 2-0 and 4-1; Kamiakin and Walla Walla are each 1-0 in MCC play (Braves are 5-0 overall, Blue Devils are 2-0); Hermiston sits in sixth at 1-2/2-4; Hanford is 0-2/1-4; Southridge is 0-2/1-5; and Pasco is 0-3/1-5.
Tuesday roundup:
Chiawana 83, Hermiston 44: Cooper DeWitt had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to lead the host Riverhawks to the win. Connor Mendez came off the bench to go 7-for-8 shooting and have a team-high 18 points.
Kamiakin 72, Southridge 49: Sophomore Trey Arland scored 28 points and added 5 assists to lead the host Braves to the win.
Kennewick 69, Pasco 43: Ayoni Benavidez scored 28 points as the host Lions won.
Richland 61, Hanford 47: Andrew Albrecht and Twazae Gladney had 16 points each as host Richland beat Hanford.
Girls basketball
Here are the MCC girls basketball standings after Tuesday’s games: Kennewick (2-0/5-0), Chiawana (2-0/4-1) and Richland (2-0/3-3) tied for first; Kamiakin right behind at 1-0/2-3; Pasco in fifth at 2-1/4-1; Walla Walla is sixth at 0-1/1-1; Southridge (0-2/2-3) and Hanford (0-2/1-4) are tied for seventh; and Hermiston is at 0-3/2-4.
Tuesday roundup:
Chiawana 63, Hermiston 41: Talia von Oelhoffen scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the host Riverhawks to the win. Alyssa Agundis added 13 points and six steals, while Delaney Pink had 11 points to help Chiawana.
Kamiakin 60, Southridge 48: Amani Davis scored 24 points to lead the host Braves to the win.
Kennewick 64, Pasco 52: The host Lions jumped out to a 24-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. Aislin Fiander led the Lions with 17 points.
Richland 68, Hanford 45: Laura Smith scored 20 points to lead the host Bombers to the win.
Women’s basketball
Providence College junior guard Emilee Maldonado (Sunnyside) was named the Frontier Conference Women’s Pre-Season Player of the Year in Basketball.
The Argos, now 6-3, are 0-2 in conference play.
Maldonado averages 13.9 points and 5.2 assists a game.
Two Chiawana grads are also in the starting lineup for the Montana school: sisters Bailey and Kenedy Cartwright.
Bailey Cartwright is a graduate student transfer who played at Concordia of Portland. She leads the Argos with 16.3 points and 9.0 rebounds.
Kenedy Cartwright is a sophomore, and she averages 9.4 points a game.
Kennewick High grad Alicia Oatis is a sophomore, and she is redshirting this season.
