Mid-Columbia: Hanford crowns 5 champions at Klahowya tourney
The Hanford High School wrestling team had five champions Saturday as it cruised to the team title at the Keigen Langholff Memorial Tournament at Klahowya High School.
The Falcons had 226 points, followed by Olympic (182.5) and host Klahowya (131).
Hunter Murphey posted a 16-6 major decision over Anjelo Pangelinan of Olympic at 113 pounds, while Glenn Siekawitch won by injury default over Hanford teammate Jackson Salazar at 120.
At 182, Hanford’s Hayden Henry pinned Ryan Caldwell of Port Townsend in 3:37.
Jake Hanson picked up the 195-pound title for the Falcons, pinning Daustin Estrada of Aberdeen in 22 seconds.
Jonathan Burt finished off the championship parade, picking up a forfeit from teammate Josh Brayton at 220.
In total, the Falcons had 13 placers, including Cley Green, who was second at 138, and Michael Bishop, second at 170.
Girls Mountain Madness
Freshman Taylor Wilson of Hanford won the 100-pound title Saturday at the Mountain Madness tournament at Cle Elum-Roslyn High School.
Wilson, the top-ranked wrestler in the division, earned a 3-1 decision over Melanie Flores of Moses Lake, who is ranked second.
Sunnyside won the team title with 128 points, with Connell second (116) and Hanford third (93). Kiona-Benton and Prosser tied for ninth with 52 points, while Columbia-Burbank was 11th (44) and Royal 22nd (7).
Hanford added a second title at 190 as seventh-ranked Grace Nelson beat fourth-ranked Reyna Huecias of Mabton 11-9 in overtime. Michaela Kane (155), Hailey Say (135) and Natalia Negrete (145) finished fourth for the Falcons.
Devin Gamez of Kiona-Benton won the 110-pound title with a 33-second pin of Brewster’s Kaitlin Garcia, and teammate Maloree Calzadillas won the 155-pound crown with a 3:54 pin of Connell’s Rosa Ramirez.
Also for Connell, Emma Andrewjeski was second at 170, Alma Manzo was second at 120 and Karime Tlachi was third at 125.
At 135, Columbia-Burbank’s Katelynn Brashear pinned Emily Carroll of Wenatchee for the Coyotes’ only title.
Prosser’s Ahlee Yanez took the 145-pound title with a 3:56 pin of Victoria Valencia of Mabton.
Swimming
Hanford won all but two events Saturday to win the team title at the Mid-Columbia Conference Championships at Whitman College in Walla Walla.
The Falcons swam away with 161 points, while Walla Walla was second (137), followed by Richland (82), Chiawana (16) and Pasco (10).
Ryan Monrean won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Falcons, while the 400 free relay team remained undefeated.
The MCC teams will compete at districts Feb. 9-10 in Kelso with the Greater St. Helens League. This year, the top three placers automatically advance to state, along with anyone who already has earned a state-qualifying time in their event.
