Mid-Columbia: Hanford boys prevail in high-scoring affair

Boys basketball

HANFORD 74, SOUTHRIDGE 68: Conner Woodward scored 22 points and Dan Izquierdo 20 to lead the visiting Falcons to a high-scoring win in MCC play.

Hanford took a 45-27 lead into the locker room, but Southridge chipped back in the second half. Anthony Jackson led the Suns with a game-high 26 points and Tristan Smith added 20.

RICHLAND 81, PASCO 27: Cole Northrop scored 21 points and the host Bombers didn’t allow the Bulldogs to score in double-digits in a single quarter in an MCC contest.

Riley Sorn had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Garrett Streufert added 10 rebounds and seven assists for Richland (8-0, 2-0).

Diego Gutierrez led the Bulldogs (1-5, 0-2) with 12 points on a night when they shot 14.6 percent from the floor and were out-rebounded 51-22.

WALLA WALLA 59, CHIAWANA 52: Javon Handcox came off the bench to lead all scorers with 14 points as the host Blue Devils used a balanced attack to pull away from the Riverhawks late in an MCC contest.

Chiawana (1-7, 0-2) was again without second-leading scorer Taylor Kroll, who rolled his ankle in practice Thursday. Austin Penny and Matthew Kroner led the Riverhawks with 13 points each.

Wa-Hi (5-1, 2-0) got 13 points from Tyler Greene and 12 each from Taylor Hamada and Dylan Sullivan.

KAMIAKIN 70, KENNEWICK 40: Garrett Paxton had a game-high 18 points and six rebounds as the visiting Braves (4-2, 2-0) downed their cross-town rivals in an MCC matchup.

Jenner Norwood had eight points to lead Kennewick (3-3, 0-2).

EPHRATA 71, PROSSER 58: Hayden Hicks scored 16 points and Will Weinmann 15, but the visiting Mustangs (4-3, 3-2) fell on a poor shooting night.

WAHLUKE 65, KIONA-BENTON 60: Saul Quinones matched Ricky Cabrera for a game-high 24 points, but the host Bears faded in the final minute in a showdown between a couple SCAC East heavyweights.

Ki-Be (3-3, 1-1) cut Wahluke’s lead to one point with 50 seconds to go, but a foul on a Warriors’ 3-point shooter allowed the visitors to open the lead back up for good.

Sergio Pineda added 20 points for Wahluke.

COLUMBIA-BURBANK 58, WARDEN 34: Gilbert knocked down four treys to lead all scorers with 16 points as the host Coyotes (4-2, 2-0) picked up an SCAC East victory.

Dreyton Martinez made just one field goal, but went 13 of 15 from the free-throw line to lead Warden (3-2, 0-1) with 15 points.

CONNELL 80, COLLEGE PLACE 28: Ridge Pauley made four 3-pointers for a game-high 20 points as the host Eagles (2-3) soared past the Hawks in SCAC East play.

ROYAL 54, RIVER VIEW 41: Corbin Christensen had 20 points to lead the visiting Knights to an SCAC East victory.

Abel Khatthavong had 11 points for River View.

TRI-CITIES PREP 62, WHITE SWAN 60: Stefan Geist scored 18 points and Max Nelson and Kobe Singleton added 15 and 14, respectively, as the host Jaguars (5-0, 2-0) took down the Cougars in EWAC play.

White Swan made a late charge, going on a 26-17 run in the fourth quarter, but fell short.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 64, DESALES 55: Riley Sullivan scored 17 points and Nico Shupe added 11 points and eight boards to lead the host Patriots (3-1, 2-0) to an EWAC win.

Girls basketball

CHIAWANA 62, WALLA WALLA 43: Macey Morales scored a career-best 31 points on 6 of 10 3-point shooting to lead the Riverhawks to a road MCC win over the Blue Devils.

The victory left Chiawana (6-2, 2-0) as just one of two MCC girls teams with unblemished league records after the opening weekend of conference play; Kamiakin (7-1, 2-0) is the other.

Faith Hoe led Walla Walla (3-3, 0-2) with 15 points.

RICHLAND 80, PASCO 41: Nicole Gall scored 19 points — including 10 in the third quarter — and the visiting Bombers snapped a four-game losing skid by picking up their first MCC victory.

Richland (3-5, 1-1) outscored Pasco 28-9 in the third quarter to open up a 15-point halftime lead. Emily Garza went 7 of 10 from the free-throw line to chip in 13 points for the Bombers and Jayda Clark had a dozen.

Bella Gutierrez went 9 of 11 from the charity stripe and scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-1).

SOUTHRIDGE 45, HANFORD 43: Emmee Ball knocked down three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 14 points, and the host Suns (3-4, 1-1) rallied to get their first MCC win.

Hanford led 15-6 after the first quarter and still held a two-point advantage heading into the fourth. Sarah Ellis led the Falcons (1-5, 0-2) with 10 points.

GRANDVIEW 75, OTHELLO 43: Michelle Ruiz scored 21 points and Grace Meza 17 as the Greyhounds (3-4, 2-3) turned it on in the second half to roll past the visiting Huskies in CWAC action.

Macy Hampton scored a game-high 22 points for Othello.

COLUMBIA-BURBANK 55, WARDEN 31: Ali Martineau had a game-high 17 points and Jadyn Johnson chipped in 15 as the Coyotes (6-0, 2-0) overcame a slow start to race past the visiting Cougars (0-6, 0-1) in SCAC East play to stay perfect on the season.

RIVER VIEW 58, ROYAL 29: Morgan Munson and Serenity Kinsey each scored 16 points to lead the host Panthers to an SCAC East victory.

Munson added 10 boards and Kinsey seven.

WAHLUKE 48, KIONA-BENTON 32: Kaylynn Holiday scored 16 points to lead the visiting Warriors (2-2, 1-1) to an SCAC East win.

Nya Calzadillas scored 13 points for the Bears (0-6, 0-2), who didn’t score more than seven points in a quarter until the final period.

TRI-CITIES PREP 65, WHITE SWAN 64: Freshman Talia Von Oelhoffen continued the remarkable start to her high school career, scoring 38 points in a tight Jaguars’ victory at home in EWAC play.

TCP (3-2, 1-1) led 51-40 heading into the fourth quarter, but had to fight to hold off the Cougars.

DESALES 48, LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 47: Maddie Godwin had 20 points and six assists, but a third-quarter rally from the host Patriots (0-4, 0-2) wasn’t enough to earn their first win of the season, falling in EWAC play.

Lauryn Lyons scored a game-high 23 points for DeSales.

BOYS SWIM

MCC DUAL MEETS AT WHITMAN COLLEGE: Host Walla Walla swept all four of its dual meets as the five MCC boys swim programs squared off.

Wa-Hi’s Luke Elmenhurst bested the field in two individual events, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 23.68 seconds and the 100 free in 51.43. Richland’s Addison Pollick won the 500 free in a blazing 5:00.11 and left the field in his wake in the 100 backstroke as well, winning in 55.35.

Hanford, the league’s top team, went 3-1 despite missing four of its top swimmers, who were competing at the Washington State Senior Championships in Federal Way.
