Mid-Columbia roundup: Richland leads way in all-MCC swim/dive honors
The Mid-Columbia Conference on Tuesday announced Richland’s Claire Schaef as its swimmer of the year and fellow Bombers junior Alyssa Whittington as the diver of the year.
Schaef was a first-team selection in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle — events in which she placed in the top four at last weekend’s Class 4A state meet in Federal Way.
Whittington, a first-team diver, was 22nd at state.
Other first-team picks for Richland were junior Marcia Kim (200 individual medley), junior Neomi Mennetrot (100 butterfly), senior Katie Schroder (100 breaststroke) and its 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Walla Walla junior Paige Gardner was the first-team honoree in the 50 and 100 free, and the Blue Devils picked up another first-team selection in the 200 free relay.
Kamiakin senior Madison Thurber made the first team in the 100 backstroke.
Southridge’s Jason Hart was named the MCC coach of the year for the second consecutive season.

CROSS COUNTRY
The Kamiakin boys cross country team finished 12th on Saturday at the Nike Northwest Regional in Boise.
Coming off a third-place finish at the Class 3A state championships the previous weekend, the Braves finished in the middle of the pack among the top 24 teams in the Northwest.
Jonah Franco, who placed fourth at state, led Kamiakin’s runners by placing 57th overall in 16 minutes, 25.9 seconds on the 5-kilometer course. Ryan Child (16:38.9) was 13 seconds and 26 spots behind.
Kyler Lee (95th, 16:45.8), Porter Grigg (113th, 16:56.0) and Traven Bills (147th, 17:18.5) rounded out the Braves’ top five.

RICHLAND 4, CHIAWANA 0: Getting a 168 from ShyAnne Thorne, the Bombers outrolled the Riverhawks 709-545 in the second scratch game on their way to winning Tuesday’s Mid-Columbia Conference contest at Go Bowl in Pasco.
Najeli Ruiz led Chiawana with a 154 in the first scratch game.

Signings
Richland senior Jeff Kern signed to swim for South Dakota State University.
Kern competed at state the past three years, with best finishes of fourth in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 free as a sophomore.
“I will be mostly swimming the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley for them,” Kern said of his future with the Jackrabbits.
Alyssa Musick, a 2016 Richland graduate, swims for the SDSU women’s team. Former Richland swimmer Nathaniel Weinman (Class of 2011) also went on to compete for SDSU.
▪ Kamiakin’s Alexa Clark signed to play golf at Eastern Washington, while Mirannda Shulman will run track at Portland State.
