Martinez takes Day 1 lead at MCC girls district golf

If Jalayne Martinez needed some inspiration Monday for the girls Class 4A Mid-Columbia Conference district golf championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, she needed to look no further than her own family tree.

Across the state, her cousin Neydeen Martinez was putting the finishing touches on the NWAC women’s championship in Lakewood. Meanwhile, Jalayne was doing just fine on her own, pulling out to an eight-stroke lead on Day 1 after shooting an even-par 72.

Barring disaster, the Martinez clan will be able to crown two champions this week.

The Richland girls foursome, however, had its eyes on the team title, putting three golfers — Kea Robertson (80), Danika Palm (82) and Macy Robertson (82) — in the top four to stake a 25-stroke advantage over Pasco heading into today.

The girls will finish the tournament at Horn Rapids Golf Course beginning at 1 p.m. today.

MCC 3A:Austin Brown of Southridge took a healthy four-stroke lead in Round 1 of the Class 3A MCC district tournament at Canyon Lakes Golf Course. With two other golfers — Larson Watia (82) and Tyler Brunson (84) — rooted in the top 6, the Suns established themselves as the team to beat when the tournament resumes today at Canyon Lakes.

Kamiakin, however, looms just five strokes back, and with McGwire Hanson (80) and Bolton Dauenhauer (82) lurking in the top five , that lead might not be safe enough.

Andrew Fridley of Kennewick sits in third place after a first-round of 81.

NOTE: No results were received form the 4A boys or 3A girls tournaments.
