Port Ludlow, Wash. -- The three Mid-Columbians -- Ryan Baumgart, Nick Mandell and Drew McCullough -- at the 58th Pacific Northwest Junior Boys Amateur Golf Championship struggled in Monday's opening round at Port Ludlow Golf Club.
Mandell from Kennewick is tied for 46th after his round of 41-36 for 5-over-par 77. Baumgart from Walla Walla went 41-38 for 79 and is tied for 66th. McCullough from Richland, shot 44-36 for 80 and is tied for 73rd.
Spencer Weiss of Sammamish, Wash. and Joe Fryer of Mukilteo, Wash. grabbed a share of the first-round lead after each shot 3-under-par 69.
Weiss, who recently missed out on a spot in the U.S. Amateur by one stroke, posted five birdies to only two bogeys during Monday's round, setting himself up perfectly for a run at medalist honors Tuesday.

Derek Bayley of Rathdrum, Idaho, Brett Manke of Lakewood, Wash., and Li Wang of Sammamish, Wash. are the only other players under par after the first round of qualifying, each finishing at 1-under-par 71.
The tournament features 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by single-elimination match play, with a championship Flight of 32 players and additional flights of eight players.
