Columbia Basin College baseball makes head-coaching change

The Columbia Basin College baseball team has a new head coach.

Assistant Brent Wyatt has moved into the top job after Gabe Boruff accepted an assistant baseball coaching position at Division I Tulane University.

Wyatt was a standout baseball player at Ellensburg High School. He was named the Mid-Valley League MVP as a senior in 2003.

He played baseball for Boruff at Wenatchee Valley College and then went to Lewis-Clark State College, where he played on the 2007 and 2008 NAIA national championship teams under coach Ed Cheff.

The Detroit Tigers selected Wyatt in the 26th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. He played in the organization until 2012, finishing his career with the Double-A Erie SeaWolves. The utilityman had a career .260 batting average with 76 doubles, 17 triples, 14 home runs and 156 RBIs.

The 31-year-old has coached high school baseball at Ellensburg and in Rexburg, Idaho.

Boruff coached the Hawks for two years, finishing with a 66-29 (.695) overall record.

Last season, CBC went 34-14 overall and 19-9 in the NWAC East. In the postseason, the Hawks fell short of the Elite Eight, losing to Pierce in the final game of the West Super Regional in Tacoma.
