CBC, Walla Walla each go 1-1 on Day One of NWAC softball championships
The road to an NWAC title has gotten a little tougher for the Columbia Basin College softball team.
After opening with a 7-6 win over NWAC East rival Walla Walla on Friday at Portland’s Delta Park, the Hawks fell to top-ranked Bellevue 12-5 to drop into the one-loss bracket.
CBC (33-17) will try to stave off elimination when it faces Clackamas at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Walla Walla (29-19) is still alive after beating Olympic 8-0 in five innings. The Warriors also will play at 9 a.m. Saturday, going up against North Idaho.
All five NWAC East teams that made the tournament are in the one-loss bracket.
Kadi Patterson (Hanford) drove in three runs for CBC in its victory over Walla Walla.
The Warriors rallied to go up 6-5 in the fourth, but Patterson and Sarah Gilliam (Southridge) each hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to put the Hawks ahead for good.
CBC right-hander Kayla Andrews (Richland), the NWAC Eastern Region pitcher of the year, gave up 13 hits, but she struck out eight and walked two in seven innings.
Andrews took the loss against Bellevue. She struck out four, but allowed five hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Suzie Lubanski went 3-for-4 with two RBIs against the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, former Walla Walla High School standout Jacie McDaniels had four hits on the day for her hometown Warriors.
Mallory Chavez and Brittney Bradley, who combined to allow nine walks in the loss to CBC, teamed up for a three-hitter against Olympic.
In other NWAC tournament games, Hunter Schneitter (Kamiakin) drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to help Wenatchee Valley stay alive with a 5-4 victory over Everett. She scored a run for the Knights in their 7-2, tournament-opening loss to Mt. Hood.
Kylee Andreason (Hermiston) had three hits on the day as Spokane went 1-1 on Day One. The Sasquatch rolled to a 7-0 win over Southwestern Oregon, but then lost to Douglas 2-0.

BASEBALL
NWAC SUPER REGIONALS: An error by CBC third baseman Anthony Gosline led to an Edmonds run in the eighth, and the Tritons beat the Hawks 1-0 at the NWAC West Super Regional in Tacoma.
CBC (32-13) will play Edmonds again in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School.

It was a more positive day for Walla Walla CC, which won twice at the North Super Regional in Mount Vernon.
The Warriors opened with a 10-2 win over Chemeketa, then defeated Skagit Valley 4-2. They will play in the championship round at 5 p.m. Saturday against the Chemeketa-Skagit Valley winner.
Former Kennewick standout Steven Sordahl drove in six runs on the day for the Warriors (27-16).
