College baseball: Columbia Basin splits with Yakima Valley

The Columbia Basin College baseball team shut out visiting Yakima Valley 5-0 in the first game of Wednesday’s NWAC East doubleheader, ending the Yaks’ four-game winning streak.

But first-place Yakima Valley got its revenge in Game 2, piling on four runs in the ninth for an 8-0 victory.

Yakima Valley improved to 27-13 overall and 17-5 in NWAC East play, while CBC (27-11, 14-8) is third behind Treasure Valley in the regional standings.

CBC’s Tanner Simpson pitched all nine innings in the opener, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out four. He was backed by Zack Chamberlain (2-for-4, RBI) and Logan Green (triple, RBI).

In the nightcap, the Hawks sent out seven pitchers to face the Yaks, who racked up 13 hits, including a home run by Karsten Sherman.

Isaac Mitchum pitched the first six innings for YVCC, and Dakota Weindell finished the five-hitter.

▪ Montana State Billings seniors and twin brothers Drew and Brett Christina (Walla Walla) were on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Baseball All-Academic Team.

Drew, a pitcher and chemistry major, was the only player on the team with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. Drew also has been named the MSU Billings Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Brett, an infielder studying history, has a 3.97 GPA.

Saint Martin’s sophomore Adam Eskil (DeSales) made the team with his 3.49 GPA in mechanical engineering.
