CBC roundup: Softball team takes 2 more from Wenatchee Valley
The Columbia Basin College softball team dug deep Saturday to complete the season sweep of longtime NWAC East powerhouse Wenatchee Valley College.
The Hawks opened their doubleheader with a 10-6 victory. In Game 2, they scored all of their runs in the seventh inning to beat the Knights 8-5.
“For us to win the series 4-0 and to take the series on the road is pretty big,” CBC coach Adrian Ochoa said.
It was the first time since 2005 that CBC (25-9 overall, 15-3 NWAC East) won all four games against Wenatchee Valley (16-11, 11-7).
CBC got on the board in Game 2 with a bases-loaded walk, making the score 5-1.
With two outs, WVC intentionally walked Kayla Andrews (Richland) and Kadi Patterson (Hanford), bringing in another run.
Terin Wade (Kennewick) followed with a two-run single to make it 5-4. Sarah Gilliam (Southridge), who led off the inning with a single, then stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to left for the winning margin.
Ochoa said he told his players “to find something special within themselves and their teammates before (last Sunday’s) Bellevue game.”
The Hawks rolled to a 14-5 win over the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 1 in the NWAC Alaska Airlines Softball Coaches Poll. They kept the momentum going with this weekend’s sweeps of Yakima Valley and Wenatchee Valley.
Maddy Jones (Richland) drove in two runs in Game 1 against the Knights, while Andrews struck out four in seven innings. She relieved Gilliam in Game 2 and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
