Roundup: CBC baseball, softball sweep to top of NWAC East standings
Michael Wyatt and Isaiah Hatch had big days at the plate and on the basepaths, and Columbia Basin College swept Spokane 14-8 and 11-6 on Saturday afternoon to remain atop the NWAC East baseball standings.
CBC (17-3, 4-0) kept pace with Yakima Valley (14-8, 4-0), which swept Treasure Valley 8-2 and 7-6.
Wyatt was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored in the first game, while Hatch went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Spencer Bennion provided the key hits, with his two-run single powering a three-run fifth inning to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead over the Sasquatch (11-7, 0-4). Bennion delivered an RBI double one inning later, part of a five-run frame that provided much-needed insurances as the two teams combined to score 11 runs over the final 2 1/2 innings.
Hatch and Wyatt were at it again in Game 2, combining for four hits, five stolen bases and six runs scored.
Drew Loera’s RBI single in the fourth gave CBC the lead for good, and Logan Green’s two-run hit in the fifth helped seal the deal.

CBC 9-9, WALLA WALLA 2-1: Kayla Andrews threw both ends of the doubleheader, smacked two homers and drove in eight runs to lead the Hawks to a convincing sweep of the visiting Warriors.
Megan McMurrin doubled and drove in three runs in the opener, and Terin Wade also drove in a pair. Andrews’ grand slam in the fourth helped CBC open a 7-2 lead.
“We’re fortunate to have such a great pitcher in Kayla, but we’re also playing great defense behind her,” CBC coach Adrian Ochoa said, giving a special nod to third baseman Keondra Simpson.
“She takes some shots down that line,” he said. “She had an outstanding weekend at third base. She was turning double plays, snagging balls. ... We’re fortunate to have a kid like that at third base.”
The Hawks (18-6, 10-2) moved back into first place in the NWAC East as Walla Walla (9-11) fell to 7-3. North Idaho, which swept CBC on Wednesday, took two from Yakima Valley and is tied with CBC at 10-2.
“To be able to go 4-0 this weekend (including a sweep of Blue Mountain on Friday), after getting punched in the mouth by North Idaho especially, it was a pretty special weekend,” Ochoa said.
