CBC roundup: Men advance to NWAC basketball quarterfinals

The Columbia Basin College men’s basketball team will play on the final weekend of the NWAC season.

The Hawks (14-14) beat host Lower Columbia College 63-53 on Saturday to advance to next weekend’s NWAC championships at Everett Community College.

CBC, the NWAC East’s No. 4 seed, will face Whatcom at 6 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.

All four East teams that made the postseason — CBC, Spokane, Big Bend and Yakima Valley — are into the final eight.

Andrew Reddout had 19 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists for CBC, which led 33-24 at halftime. Brad Scott (Southridge) contributed 17 points and seven rebounds, and Aaric Wren (Chiawana) scored 11 points.

Lawrence Russell scored 18 points for LCC (20-9), which won the West Region.

CENTRALIA WOMEN 74, CBC 58: The road to Everett ended for the CBC women in a regional-round loss to the Trailblazers.

Cayla Jones scored 12 points, and Alexcis Higginbotham grabbed 10 rebounds for CBC (17-13).

The Hawks took a 16-13 first-quarter lead, but they trailed by one at halftime. In the second half, host Centralia outscored CBC 35-20 and secured its spot as one of the final eight teams in the NWAC tournament.

Tiana Thompson had 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Monty Cooper finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Centralia (23-7). The Trailblazers will face Lane at 4 p.m. Thursday in Everett.

Among other NWAC East teams, Wenatchee Valley and Spokane won their regional-round games, while Treasure Valley lost.

Softball

CLACKAMAS 11-7, CBC 1-5: The Hawks suffered their first two losses of the season against the visiting Cougars.

Clackamas hit CBC ace Kayla Andrews hard in the opener. In 6 2/3 innings, Andrews struck out nine, but she allowed nine hits and 11 runs — nine earned. She also walked four.

The Cougars scored 10 of their runs over the final three innings.

The second game was a much closer affair.

CBC took a 3-0 lead in the first, but Clackamas tied it in the fourth. Though the Hawks added a run in the bottom half of the inning, the Cougars went ahead for good in a three-run fifth.

Suzie Lubanski finished the day with four hits for CBC (6-2), which will host Mt. Hood on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.

CBC 6-6, PRAIRIE BASEBALL ACADEMY 3-0: The Hawks tallied 27 hits in their doubleheader home sweep.

In Game 1, CBC took a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Prairie tied it with a three-run eighth. In the bottom half of the inning, CBC piled on three runs of its own for the final margin.

CBC’s second-inning run was all the offense the Hawks needed in Game 2. Tanner Simpson, who went seven innings, combined with Cory Wills and Chris Noonan on the two-hit shutout.

Anthony Gosline had four hits on the day for CBC. Zack Chamberlain had three hits and Brendan McClary three RBIs in the opener, while Logan Green went 3-for-5 in Game 2.

CBC (4-0) will host Clark in a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
