Neidhold leads NWAACC women's golf championships

Hope Neidhold got off to a rough start at the NWAACC women’s golf championships Sunday at Horn Rapids Golf Course but righted herself enough to take the first-round lead.

Neidhold, a Richland native, topped her drive into the water on the first hole to take a double-bogey but finished the day with an 84 to lead Leslie Guzman of Olympic by one stroke. CBC teammates Janci Spoo and Abbey McMinn each shot an 87 to tie for third place heading into today’s final round.

The CBC women put all five golfers in the top 10 and lead the team race at 258 — 14 strokes ahead of Spokane at 272.

The Spokane men lead the men’s team race at 189, holding a 10-stroke advantage over Southwest Oregon (299). Max Tuckner of Bellevue (68) and Brady Caulkins of Spokane (69) battled for the first-round lead, while CBC’s Jack Tumlinson finished tied for eighth with a 74.

Today’s championship round begins at 7:30 a.m., beginning with the women and followed by the men.
