Savas leads CBC baseball's sweep of Walla Walla
When Columbia Basin College interim coach Scott Rogers had to discipline several players this weekend for violations of the school’s conduct code, he needed someone to step up in their absence.
Nick Savas was happy to oblige during the Hawks’ 7-2, 10-0 NWAACC doubleheader sweep at Walla Walla on Saturday.
The 5-foot-11 infielder took his place at third base and delivered four hits on the day while adding a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBIs.
“It was nice to see our pitching and offense click at the same time,” Rogers said. “Up until now we’ve either had to outpitch teams because our offense wasn’t hitting, or we had to outslug somebody because we weren’t pitching well.”
Kenton Brunson also had a good day at the plate for CBC, driving in four runs on four hits.
Matthey Jensen and Jacob Gleichman had outstanding starts for the Hawks on the mound. Jensen allowed a run on five hits over six innings to get the Game 1 win, while Gleichman tossed seven scoreless innings in Game 2 before giving way to JD Page and Trenton Avery, who kept the shutout intact.
Clayten Ayres led the Warriors offense in the opener, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
