Prep wrestling

Recapping the highlights from last weekend, area wrestlers performed well at tournaments all over the Northwest.

At the Gut Check tournament in the Showare Center in Kent, Chiawana’s Robby Vaughn earned the championship at 145 pounds, while teammates Isaiah Anderson (195) and Tyson Stover (182) each placed second.

Kamiakin’s Joey Chavez placed third at 152 pounds.

Pasco’s Isaiah Gonzalez finished first at 160 pounds at the prestigious Rollie Lane Invitational last weekend in Nampa, Idaho.

Teammate Damien Silva finished second at 285.

Meanwhile, Hanford and Pasco went 1-2 in the girls portion of the tournament.

The Falcons got titles from Lana Lilley at 170 pounds, and Katelyn Gelston at 191.

Grace Nelson (155) and Hailey Say (143) each placed second in their respective weight classes.

As a sidenote, the Falcons’ Taylor Wilson wrestled against boys in the 98-pound division, going 2-2.

Justice Sanchez was Pasco’s top placer in the girls tournament, placing second at 109 pounds.

Walla Walla’s Annelise Whitaker won the girls 136-pound title.

The Southridge and Hanford boys had some high placers at the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High School in Spokane on Saturday.

For Hanford, three wrestlers — Treyton Keller at 152 pounds, Dalton McCorkle at 132, and Jakobie Reynolds at 220 — all placed second after making the finals.

For Southridge, Ryan Stayrook (160 pounds) and Jacob Williams (126) both finished second in their respective weight classes.

Finally, Kennewick and Grandview boys each had two division champions Saturday at the Blackhawk Invitational in Cheney.

For the Lions, it was Ler Htoo at 113 pounds, and Antonio Ramos at 132.

Grandview’s champs were Damian Monreal at 120, and Jesus Sanchez at 126.

Girls’ bowling

A quick look at Mid-Columbia Conference girls bowling standings (through games of Monday, Jan. 6) shows that the Kennewick Lions are dominating the field so far.

The Lions are 10-0 in MCC play. They’re followed by Hanford at 8-2, Chiawana at 6-3, both Hermiston and Richland at 5-5, Pasco at 4-6, Southridge and Walla Walla at 3-7, and Kamiakin at 1-10.

Southridge senior Nicole Omlor is the best MCC bowler so far, averaging 190.11.

But Kennewick follows right behind with two standouts: sophomore Paige Burns at 184.35, and senior Aydri Turnbull at 177.15.

Here is one of the biggest reasons Kennewick is at the top of the standings: the Lions lead in Baker Games average at 170.15. Walla Walla is second, but way back at 148.50.

It’s hard to score well in Baker Games, because teammates take turns bowling a frame, so no one gets into a good rhythm.

Notes

Congrats to Pasco’s Isaiah Gonzalez for being named a WIAA state athlete of the week, for his Rollie Lane championship.

Walla Walla’s Casey Waddell was named the Washington Officials Association’s Girls Basketball Official of the Year. Well deserved.
