Area colleges: Hodgins sisters, Ferenz star at Big Sky tournament

Hayley Hodgins (Chiawana High School) had 27 points, and younger sister Delaney scored 26 to go with her nine rebounds as Eastern Washington edged Sacramento State 100-97 on Wednesday to reach the Big Sky Conference tournament semifinals in Reno, Nev.

Ashli Payne contributed 19 points and 18 rebounds for the Eagles (20-11), who got past a Hornets team that had three players with 20-plus points.

In the semifinals, EWU will play Idaho, an 86-83 overtime winner over Weber State.

Former Walla Walla High School standout Mikayla Ferenz finished with 29 points for the Vandals (22-9), which will face EWU at 2:35 p.m. Friday.

Locals named to NWAC All-Star basketball rosters

Columbia Basin College’s Marissa Caballero (Grandview) and Walla Walla’s Kennedy Corrigan (Richland) are listed on the NWAC North-East Women’s All-Star team that will play against the South-West squad at 6 p.m. Thursday at Everett Community College.

Walla Walla’s Payton Radliff (Richland) is on the North-East men’s team that will play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Columbia Basin College hires new women’s soccer coach

Former Southern Oregon University assistant Omar Anderson will take over as the Columbia Basin College women’s soccer coach, replacing Matt Mills.

Anderson, a former Peninsula College player, served as an assistant for the Pirates men’s and women’s soccer programs. In that position, he was a part of five NWAC championships and seven West Region titles.

Mills coached the Hawks for 13 seasons and retired with a 121-96-33 record. He took CBC to the NWAC playoffs in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013. The Hawks won the title in 2008 and took second in 2009.

Lewis-Clark State women returning to NAIA championships

The Lewis-Clark State women’s basketball team, which includes freshman Hailey Turner of Richland, beat Great Falls (Mont.) 79-73 on Tuesday to claim the Frontier Conference tournament title.

Turner scored three points in the win for LCSC (25-6), which received an automatic bid for the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championships in Independence, Mo.

The 13th-ranked Warriors will open the tournament at 7:45 p.m. March 16 against two-time defending national champion Oklahoma City, which beat them in the first round last year.

Morgan Grier (CBC) had 19 points in the loss for Great Falls (22-10).

On the men’s side, Frontier Conference tournament champion LCSC (28-4) is ranked fourth in the NAIA coaches’ poll. The Warriors, who have Kendall Watson (Hanford) on their roster, will open the NAIA tournament against Xavier (La.) at 6 p.m. March 17 in Kansas City, Mo.
