College update for Dec. 24

MSU BILLINGS: Freshman defender Dariann Oaks (Kamiakin) had an assist in a 1-0 women’s soccer win over Western Oregon on Oct. 24. MSU Billings finished the season at 8-7-2.

NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: Michelle Fletcher (Kamiakin) finished third overall to help the women’s cross country team win the team title at the Cascade Collegiate Conference championships Nov. 7 in Salem, Ore. Fletcher was named all-conference. Teammate Emily Moon (Kamiakin) finished 32nd. In the men’s race, Garrett Kraal (Kamiakin) finished third overall and was named all-conference. On Nov. 21, Fletcher helped lead the women’s team to the NAIA team title. Fletcher placed 10th overall at the national championships. Meanwhile, Kraal placed 59th overall at the NAIA nationals — the top finisher for the men’s team.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE: Michael Mollay (Walla Walla CC) scored three goals and two assists this season for the 12-6-1 men’s soccer team.

PACIFIC: Forward Sydney Virgen (Chiawana) had one assist this season for the 4-14-2 women’s soccer team. Defender Deanna Quadrel (Hanford) played in five matches. ... Jamie Steach (Chiawana) had 243 assists this season for the 10-14 volleyball team. That ranked her second on the team.

PLU: Wide receiver Juston Lind (Othello) caught 33 passes for 404 yards and a touchdown this season for the football team. ... In a 45-7 loss to Pacific on Oct. 3, LB Drew Oord (Kamiakin) had five tackles and a fumble recovery. ... Defender Megan Zimmerman (Pasco, Tri-Cities Prep) had an assist in 17 matches for the 15-3-2 women’s soccer team. Teammate Sarah Burns (Kamiakin), also a defender, played in nine matches.

REDLANDS: Jalen DeVine (Hanford) had four tackles and a quarterback hurry in a 38-7 football win over Pomona Pitzer on Oct. 3.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN: Wide receiver Tyrell McGee (CBC) had 28 catches for 420 yards for the 5-6 football team, while defensive back Jordan Upton (CBC) was in on 39 tackles.

ROGERS STATE: Paige Pontarolo (Walla Walla, Walla Walla CC) had two goals this season for the 1-16 women’s soccer team. Lexi Ellingsen (Chiawana) started 13 matches on defense and had an assist.

SAN DIEGO STATE: Senior Natilee Ruiz (Othello) earned the College of Education’s Arthur Ashe Jr. Award, which is given each year to a student who has excelled in the classroom and in sports. Ruiz, a child and family development major, has been a two-year captain for the women’s swim team. She has been named a Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete each of her years at SDSU and has made the dean’s list every semester. Ruiz also keeps busy outside of school and sports, where she organizes events that promote awareness for important subjects such as ALS, autism and a free health care clinic. She has had the opportunity to volunteer and intern at the SDSU Children’s Center, Rady Children’s Hospital and a therapeutic horseback riding ranch for children with special needs.

SEATTLE PACIFIC: Bryce Leavitt (Kennewick) and Nathan Streufert (Richland) both started for the men’s basketball team in a 98-80 exhibition loss to Washington on Nov. 5. Leavitt, a senior, had seven points, five rebounds and five assists. Streufert, a redshirt freshman, added four points and three rebounds.

SEATTLE U: Nick Connors (Richland) swam a 1:59.16 in the men’s 200-meter freestyle in his preliminary heat at the AT&T Winter National Championships in Federal Way on Dec. 4.

SIMON FRASER: The football team may have finished with an 0-9 record, but defensive back Jake Oram (Hanford) was fifth on the team in tackles. Oram, a junior, was in on 32 tackles (one for loss) and forced one fumble.

TEXAS A&M: Lisa Bratton (Richland) swam a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team, was second in the 100 backstroke (54.08 seconds) and was third in the 200 back (1:55.75) for the women’s swim team in a 166-134 loss to Texas on Nov. 6. ... In a win over Kentucky on Oct. 14, Bratton swam leadoff for the winning 200 medley relay and was third in the 100 backstroke and 200 back.

WALLA WALLA UNIVERSITY: Rylee Sutton (Walla Walla Valley Academy) led the 3-17 volleyball team in digs this season with 228, and in service aces with 16.

WARNER PACIFIC: The men’s soccer team (10-8-1) was eliminated from the Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs Nov. 11, losing 3-0 to Great Falls. Senior Mario Guizar (Kamiakin, Walla Walla CC) was the team’s second-leading scorer with 21 points (10 goals, one assist) this season. Guizar was first-team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference as a midfielder. Senior defender Geovanny Vazquez (Kennewick, Walla Walla CC) had an assist in 10 matches.

WASHINGTON: Lindsey Bradley (Richland) placed 19th overall out of 113 runners at the Washington Invitational on Oct. 2. Bradley, a freshman, covered the 6-kilometer course in 20:17.4. She finished 57th overall at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships in Colfax on Oct. 30.

WSU: Nick Mandell (Southridge) finished tied for fourth at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate men’s golf tournament Sept. 29. Mandell was minus-6 with a 207 total over three rounds. ... Michael Williams (Richland) finished 12th overall at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships on Oct. 30. In the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 21, the sophomore Williams was the first Cougar to cross the finish line, placing 57th overall.

WOU: Alisha Bettinson (Richland) led the 8-21 volleyball team in kills this season with 294. She was second on the team in digs with 287. Bettinson also made the GNAC All-Academic team. ... Senior forward Julie Belden (Walla Walla CC) played in 12 matches for the 8-8-1 women’s soccer team.

WWU: Jeffrey Marcum (Richland) finished 17th overall at the Western New Mexico Invite men’s golf tournament Sept. 28-29. Marcum fired a two-round score of 144 (73-71) at the University Golf Course. ... Tracy Melville (Lind-Ritzville) placed 10th overall at the GNAC women’s cross country championships Oct. 24. That made her a GNAC all-star as a freshman. At the NCAA D-II West Regionals, Melville placed 27th overall. ... Defender Derek Zimmerman (Pasco) played in 16 matches for the 5-10-3 men’s soccer team. ... Senior center Kayla Bernsen (Moses Lake) recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, but the women’s basketball team dropped a 79-56 contest to UC San Diego on Nov. 21 at the West Region Crossover Classic.

WHITMAN: Kendall Dunovant (Walla Walla) finished tied for eighth at the Whitman Women’s Golf Invitational on Sept. 27. She shot a two-round, 25-over-par score of 169 in Walla Walla.

WHITWORTH: Linebacker Alex Myrick (Royal) finished seventh in tackles with 38 (two QB sacks) to help lead the football team to a 9-2 record. ... Yvonne LaCoursiere (Hermiston) finished seventh at the Whitman Women’s Golf Invitational on Sept. 27. She shot a two-round, 20-over-par score of 164 in Walla Walla.

WILLAMETTE: Emma Sanders (Southridge) started at midfielder for all 20 of the 9-9-2 women’s soccer team’s matches, while defender Jaclyn Parnell (Richland) started in 15 matches.

WYOMING: Sophomore golfer Drew McCullough (Richland) finished tied for 12th with a 71-71-72 for a 2-under 214 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite on Sept. 13 at Air Force.
