McCullough reaches quarters at state amateur tourney

Richland’s Drew McCullough won two matches Thursday in Walla Walla to advance to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship.

In the round of 32 at Wine Valley Golf Club, McCullough beat Harrison Murphy of McKinney, Texas, 3 and 1. McCullough then defeated Stephen Griggs of Carmichael, Calif., 3 and 2.

McCullough will match up against Conner Barr of Beaverton at 8 a.m. Friday.

Nick Mandell of Kennewick lost to Spokane’s Eric Ansett 3 and 1 in the round of 32.

▪ Idaho graduate Kristin Strankman (Richland) lost in the round of 16 in the Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.

Strankman lost 7 and 5 to Princess Superal of Sun City, Calif. She was down 1 after five holes when Superal went on a run to win the next five holes with four pars and a birdie. The sudden six-hole lead at the turn effectively ended the match.

Strankman opened match play with a 1-up win over Emily Campbell of Lewisville, Texas. Superal beat Boise State-bound Jalayne Martinez (Pasco) 2 up in the round of 32.

Youth baseball

The Southridge Sr. Bandits scored all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to beat Bend 3-2 at the OSU Mid-Summer Classic in Corvallis.

With the Bandits trailing 2-0, Jake Kirchhoff drove in Jake Harvey for Southridge’s first run. Two batters later, Nick Grade hit a two-run single.

Tyson Daniels went the distance on the mound for Southridge, allowing nine hits but walking two.

▪ The Kennewick AAA Outlaws swept Northwest Premier 6-1 and 8-3 on Wednesday night at Roy Johnson Field.

Kennewick’s TJ Rea and Trent Sellers each had two hits in the opener, and Austin Bergdahl and Trevor Crawford combined to pitch a four-hitter. Bergdahl recorded 10 strikeouts in the first five innings.

In Game 2, Dillon Plew drove in three runs for the Outlaws, while Hunter Mulderig allowed one run and two hits in his six innings of work. Mulderig struck out six before Fabian Green came on to close it out.

▪ The Greater Richland Little League 10U All-Stars remained unbeaten in the state tournament with Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Mill Creek.

GRLL will face Mercer Island at 4 p.m. Friday in Lynnwood for a spot in the state championship.

Malakai Silva and relievers Chris Daniels and Jack Forbes combined for a two-hitter against Mill Creek, striking out 13.

Bryan Weston had an RBI double and scored two runs for Greater Richland.

Softball

The Washington Angels 18 Gold-Benson team fell into the losers bracket of the 18U ASA/USA Softball Gold National Championship in Oklahoma City.

After winning their first two games in bracket play, the Angels lost 11-3 to the Illinois Force in 4 1/2 innings.

AyJay Mulholland (Kamiakin) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Angels, who tumbled into a Thursday night elimination game.
