Mid-Columbia roundup: Golf tourney planned to fund CJ Mitchell scholarship
CJ Mitchell Memorial Golf Tournament planned for Aug. 6
The CJ Mitchell Memorial Golf Tournament is slated for Aug. 6 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
The event will raise money to fund a scholarship through the CBC Foundation in the name of the local sports icon, who died in January at the age of 84.
Mitchell, a member of at least six halls of fame, was a longtime sports official as well as a player and a coach.
Cost of the event is $100 a person or $400 for a team and includes dinner and two drink tickets.

Clay Barry eighth in rodeo performance
Clay Barry of Kennewick placed eighth in barrel racing in 17.643 seconds during Tuesday’s fourth performance at the National High School Finals Rodeo at the CAM-PLEX Event Facility in Gillette, Wyo.
Barry sits in 14th place overall in the barrel racing standings.
Baley Westberg (Kennewick) placed 15th in his steer wrestling 20.32 performances and is 57th in the standings. He also is 51st in the tie-down roping standings. Shayla Currin (Dayton) is sixth in pole bending standings 20.44
The rodeo runs through Saturday, with 11 high schoolers from the Mid-Columbia in competition.
Golf
Richland golfer Drew McCullough led a contingent of five area golfers who made the cut at the Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.
McCullough shot a 1-over 73 and finished stroke play at 1 under with a two-day 143, tied for 25th.
Nick Mandell (74-71—145) of Kennewick and Chris Smith (71-74—145) of Walla Walla were among a group tied for 44th, with the top 64 players making the cut for match play starting Wednesday.
Also making the cut were Richland’s Cole Lorenzo (71-75—146) and Kennewick’s Sota Nozaka (71-75—146) in a tie for 51st. Additionally, Walla Walla’s Tyler Daniels was listed as still playing his round but was tied with Lorenzo and Nozaga and well above the cut.
▪ Kristin Strankman (Richland) is tied for 14th after the first round of the Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.
Strankman shot 8-over 80 and is six shots off the pace of co-leaders Michelle Kim of Surrey, British Columbia, and Sierra Kersten of Spokane. There is a final round of stroke play Wednesday before the field is cut to 32 for match play.
Pasco grad and Class 4A state champion Jalayne Martinez shot 84 and is in a four-way tie for 23rd. Goldendale’s Bree Wanderscheid is in that group. Martinez’s cousin, Neydeen, is three shots back at 87 and tied for 30.
▪ Therese Warner (Southridge) missed the cut by three strokes at the Girls U.S. Junior Amateur in Paramus, N.J.
Warner shot a two-round total of 13-over-par 159 (76-83) on the par-73 Ridgewood Country Club course.
Youth Baseball
Hanford AAA Flames were swept by the Yakima Beetles 8-4 and 9-3 in an American Legion twinbill Monday in Yakima.
Parker Darnell slugged a two-run homer for the Flames in the opener. Brian Sands went 3-for-4 and Brad Poletski 2-for-3.
In the second game, Kedric Skinner went 2-for-3 for Hanford, which was limited to five hits.
▪ David Grewe went the distance on the mound, and Vince Graney’s bases-loaded triple sparked the offense to lead the Richland 13U Babe Ruth All-Stars to a 5-1 win over Longview in the championship game of the Southern Washington State Tournament on Sunday in Kelso.
Richland trailed early before Mason Brunson doubled to lead off the fifth. Two more runners reach to set the table for Graney’s big hit. Trevor Dame followed with an RBI single for all the runs Richland would need.
Key contributions throughout the tournament also came from: Carson Craig, Evan Thompson, Cael McMurdo, Matty Carlson, Landon Webb and Ben Fewel.
Richland advances to the Pacific Northwest Regional in Spokane July 26-31.
▪ Malakai Silva, Chris Daniels and Collin Dorsett combined for a five-inning no-hitter Monday, and the Greater Richland Little League 10U All-Stars steamrolled to a 10-0 victory over Burlington-Edison in the second round of the state tournament in Lynnwood.
Greater Richland got off to a fast start with a four-run first inning and never looked back to improve to 2-0. GR will play Mill Creek at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Softball
The Washington Angels 18 Gold-Benson team went 1-2 in pool play at the 18U ASA/USA Softball Gold National Championship in Oklahoma City.
The Angels fell to Texas Fusion Gold 6-0 before recovering to beat Newtown Rock-Amendolara 9-1 in five innings Monday. Tuesday, the Angels lost 14-3 to Colorado Next Level 18 Gold in six innings.
The Angels begin double-elimination bracket play at 9 a.m. Pacific time Wednesday against VA Legacy Elite Gold.
