Local briefs: WSU’s Derek Bayley wins Rosauers Open

A day after breaking the PGA Pacific Northwest major round record with a 59, Washington State University’s Derek Bayley finished off the best 54-hole score in Rosauers Open history Sunday in the final round of the tournament at MeadowWood Golf Course near Spokane.

Bayley shot a 63 in the final round to total a 27-under par 189 for the championship, eight strokes ahead of his nearest competitor.

Brady Sharp (Walla Walla Country Club) and Nick Atkin (Canyon Lakes) posted the top two scores for local talents as they both tied for 41st at five under. Ryan Dahl (Horn Rapids) finished in a tie for 68th at even par and Mike Kasch (Pasco Golfland) ended up tied for 85th at four over.

The Kennewick AAA Outlaws won a couple of blowouts Sunday in games against Showtime and the Cowlitz River Pilots at the Red Devil Classic in Centralia.

The Outlaws were led in their 11-1, 4-inning victory over Cowlitz by Tyler Detloff, who had two hits and drove in three runs. The Outlaws led just 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third where they exploded for eight runs to put them in line to invoke the mercy rule.

In their afternoon contest, Kennewick topped Showtime 9-0 in a game the Outlaws scored in each of their four at-bats. Austin Bergdahl had a couple knocks and drove in a pair in the victory, and Hunter Mulderig and Andrew Vargas combined to give up just one hit in the five-inning contest.

▪ The Southridge Sr. Bandits played two tight contests with the Yakima Beetles Sunday, but ultimately got swept in the doubleheader.

Southridge tied the first game with two runs in the top of the ninth, but Yakima pushed across a walk-off run in the bottom of the frame to earn the 7-6 win. Yakima’s Brett Williams was a menace at the plate as he went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs.

The second half of the doubleheader was another back-and-forth contest that saw the Bandits take a two-run lead into the sixth, but the Beetles followed with a three-run frame that set the game at its 8-7 final. Williams drove in three more runs in the second game and had a double.
