College football

Washington State junior quarterback Luke Falk was named to the watch list for the Walter Camp Award as the nation’s top player.

Falk was first team all-Pac-12 last season and led the country in passing with 381 yards a game. He set a school record with 38 touchdown passes (fourth in the nation) and was second in WSU history with 4,566 yards. He led the Cougars to a 9-4 record and victory in the Sun Bowl.

Falk already has been named to the Maxwell and Dave O’Brien Award watch lists for the top quarterback.

GOLF

Ryan Dahl of Horn Rapids Golf Course was tied for fourth at 6-under-par 66 after the first round of the Rosauers Open Invitational at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.

Andrew Whalen of Lakeview Golf and Country Club in Soap Lake shot a 64 for a one-stroke lead over fellow amateur Joe Harvie of the Classic Golf Club in Spanaway and Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley CC in Kent.

Brady Sharp of Walla Walla Country Club was tied for 15th at 69.

College basketball

The Washington men’s basketball team landed perhaps the biggest recruit in the history of the program when Michael Porter Jr., a five-star 2017 prospect, pledged to play for the Huskies.

Porter, a 6-foot-10, 210-pound forward, is considered a top-five recruit.

Rivals.com has him ranked No. 2 nationally. He is fourth on ESPN’s list and fifth in on Scout.com’s ranking. ESPN and Scout also consider him the top small forward in the country.

Porter is the latest addition to Washington’s 2017 recruiting class that includes Jaylen Nowell, a four-star guard at Garfield High in Seattle, and Blake Harris, a three-star guard from North Carolina.

Porter also joins his father, Michael Porter Sr., a recently hired UW assistant. Porter’s brother Jontay, a 2018 recruit, has verbally committed to the Huskies.

The Porter brothers moved to Seattle with their father and will play at Nathan Hale High during the 2016-17 season for new coach Brandon Roy, the former Huskies great and NBA star.
