Briefs: Bratton struggles in 100M backstroke at Olympic Trials
Former Richland High School swimmer Lisa Bratton tied for 48th overall in the 100-meter backstroke Monday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb.
Bratton was second to last in her heat, finishing in 1 minute, 2.52 seconds. Olivia Smoliga, who was in Bratton’s heat, had the top time of 59.65 across all 16 heats.
Bratton was seeded 27th with a time of 1:01.61.
The Texas A&M swimmer has the 200 individual medley Tuesday and the 200 backstroke Friday.
Randy Willis, Bratton's high school coach, said via email that Bratton slipped on her start and couldn't recover.
▪ Dana Vollmer is heading back to the Olympics, this time as a mother.
Less than 16 months after giving birth to her first child, Vollmer finished second behind Kelsi Worrell in the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. swimming trials, giving her a chance to defend her Olympic title in Rio.

Hanford was beaten 12-0 in its first game at the hands of West Valley, which scored 12 runs on just six hits and got a complete game shutout from their starting pitcher.
The Flames scored six runs in the first inning of their second game and topped Walla Walla 12-7. Four Hanford players had multi-hit games.
In the third game, the Flames again rattled the bats again and beat LaSalle 11-6.
Hanford then fell to the Seattle Tides in the final matchup of the tournament, 6-0.

Volleyball
After going 4-1 in the opening weekend of the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships, the Team Yakima 15 Gold Elite squad was competitive in all three of its matches Monday, but was ultimately swept aside.
The 15-year-old club that features several Richland High School players started the day by losing both of its second round pool play matches in straight sets. Then, Team Yakima lost its bracket placement match to Temecula Viper 25-18, 20-25, 15-12.
Team Yakima will play in the four-team, single elimination Flight 1 bracket Tuesday to round out the tournament.
The Team Yakima 14 Gold Elite squad lost its final match of the Junior National Championships Monday to the NKYVC Tide, 25-15, 25-18, to finish the tournament with a 2-7 record. Richland’s Emma Lee plays for the 14U team.
Golf
Neither of the Tri-City area golf professionals competing at the PGA Professional Championship in Verona, New York made the cut after the second day of the tournament.
Meadow Springs Country Club teaching pro Jason Aichele did well to navigate the long, open fairways of the Atunyote course at Turning Stone Resort in his first round Sunday as he fired a one-over par 73. But a 77 in his Monday morning round at Kaluhyat put him at six over for the tournament, just outside the three-over cut line.
Tri-City Country Club’s Clint Ables posted an 80 Sunday morning at Atunyote, but rebounded a bit with a 76 Monday at the notably tougher Kaluhyat track. At 12 over, Ables finished in a tie for 255th, but climbed 23 spots up the leaderboard on the second day.
The final two rounds of the PGA Professional Championship will be played Tuesday and Wednesday on the Atunyote course. The top-20 finishers out of the field of 312 earn exemptions to compete in the PGA Championship in July at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey.
