Chiawana needed five sets to hold off host Pasco 25-18, 19-25, 15-25, 25-15, 15-11 on Tuesday night to remain undefeated in Mid-Columbia Conference girls volleyball play.

“We had an advantage in the middle,” Riverhawks coach Jim Steach said. “When we were able to get the ball to our middles (Bethanie Nelson and Heidi Rus), they didn’t have much of an answer. It was Heidi’s best match of the year.”

Rus finished with eight kills, while Nelson had nine. McKaidan Moore led Chiawana with 12 kills and 17 digs, while Ashtin Olin had 43 assists.

After winning the first set, the Riverhawks (5-0) dropped the next two to the Bulldogs (2-3).

“Pasco played tough defense and served tough,” Steach said. “We lost our patience a few times.”

Catelyn Linke led Pasco with 25 kills, while Ashlin Orosco added 17 and Victoria Estes 46 assists.

RICHLAND 3, HANFORD 1: Kamry Breard had nine kills and 10 assists as the host Bombers (5-0) held off the Falcons in four games to remain undefeated in MCC play.

“We kind of struggled with our passing tonight, but Hanford fought hard,” Richland coach Bob Raidl said. “We just have to be mindful and disciplined.”

After dropping the first game 25-11, the Falcons (1-4) rallied back for a 25-23 win before losing the final two games.

“I think we surprised them a bit,” Hanford coach Nichelle Meador said.

Mikal Sanchez led the Falcons with six kills and six aces, while Kaitlyn Thompson had 18 assists.

SOUTHRIDGE 3, WALLA WALLA 1: The Blue Devils took the first game, but the visiting Suns came right back to win the next three to improve to 3-2 in MCC play.

“We had a chance to put them away and we didn’t do it,” Southridge coach John Lengphounpraseut said. “Riley Hebdon had a good night tonight. Her ball control was her best so far this year.”

Hebdon and Makenna Behrens each had 16 kills, while Maddisen McNeill had 15 kills, and Kamaile Moody handed out 46 assists.

CHIAWANA 9, WALLA WALLA 1: Braydey Hodgins and Summer Yates each recorded a hat trick for the Riverhawks, who built a 7-0 halftime lead in an easy home win over the Blue Devils.

“Summer was at (U.S.) National Team camp all last week, and Braydey was gone (on a recruiting visit) against Pasco. It was nice to have those two back playing together again,” Chiawana coach Rich Zoller said. “It’s fun to sit back and watch them work.”

Justice Aragon chipped in three assists for the Riverhawks.

SOUTHRIDGE 4, RICHLAND 0: The Suns stayed atop the MCC with a shutout win over the visiting Bombers, getting two assists apiece from Emily Durham and Emily Russell.

But Southridge goalkeeper Tiara Valadez provided some of the biggest plays, according to Suns coach Greg Sambrano.

“She really came up with some big saves. She’s been playing really well lately, coming off her line and making the goal smaller,” Sambrano said. “The cool thing about today was this was the first game we played really well. Our positioning was good, our possession was good. It’s hard to stop a player like (Richland forward) Sam (Heilman). They’ve got some other good forwards too, so this was a credit to our defense.”

“We played well,” Falcons coach Kaylie Winston said. “Pasco sat in on us and made it difficult on us. We finally broke through in the second half.”

“Heather is fun to watch,” Kamiakin coach Chris Erikson said. “She has a terrific heart. She is a good player, but it’s what inside that makes her what she is. She upbeat, positive, works hard and gets the team going.”

Olivia Blank finished with 11 saves for the Lions (1-5).

“She did a really nice job,” Erikson said of Blank. “She came out on a lot of them and made some really nice blocks and saves.”
