All quiet on contract front, but Christian Gonzalez jousts with reporter on 'X'

The silence surrounding Christian Gonzalez's contract situation, with one blip of an exception this week, continues to be deafening.

Less than two weeks away from New England Patriots training camp and the unofficial "get it done" deadline looms.

What to expect at camp?

What exactly does this mean?

Holding out is likely not an option for Gonzalez, who was most recently named the No. 3 corner in football in a piece by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who polled NFL coaches, executives and scouts. The fines levied by the league are now binding and astronomically large for that.

"Holding in," however, could certainly be an option, meaning Gonzalez could report to training camp and simply not participate. It happens often around the NFL. Patriots fans would remember linebacker Matt Judon in camp for coach Jerod Mayo in 2024, hanging out on the sidelines as his teammates endured the rigors of summer.

Completely underpaid

Heading into the fourth season on his rookie deal, Gonzalez is slated to make just under $3 million this year and just over $18 million next season. The 17th overall pick of the 2023 draft is said to be hunting for a $100-plus million extension in the neighborhood of the game's best cornerbacks.

No real deadline yet

The silence is no reason to panic, but should this linger into training camp this would certainly become an issue.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, during mandatory June minicamp in which Gonzalez was a limited participant, spoke about the importance of the player and the team being on the same page.

Gonzalez has been vague about his current stance, noting that he is leaving things in the hands of his agent.

This week, though, after Boston Sports Journal beat reporter Greg A. Bedard mentioned on his podcast that he heard from team sources about a dissatisfaction with Gonzalez's willingness to tackle, the player took to Twitter/X with a response: "@gregabedard got sum new to say abt me everyday lol."

Bedard has been outspoken about Gonzalez's superb Super Bowl performance being as much a product of some bad throws by Seahawks QB Sam Darnold as it was the play of the cornerback.
