Who Was Jayden Adams? World Cup Player Dies at Age 25 Days After Competing
South African World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams has died at age 25, officials announced Saturday, a few weeks after helping his country reach the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Cape Town police spokesperson told Newsweek by email that authorities opened an investigation after Adams’ body was discovered Saturday in Schotschekloof, a neighborhood in Cape Town. Officials have not publicly disclosed a cause of death.
One of South Africa’s brightest young players, Adams had emerged as a rising figure and was part of the national team’s historic run.
"South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” South African Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, said in a statement.
The Cape Town native rose through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC, becoming the first graduate of the club’s youth system to earn a professional contract before joining Mamelodi Sundowns and becoming a regular for the national team.
Adams was part of South Africa’s 2024 Africa Cup of Nations squad that secured a third-place finish, the country’s best result at the tournament in decades. He made his AFCON debut against Namibia and later featured as South Africa advanced to the semifinals before claiming bronze.
South Africa’s Historic World Cup Run
Adams played a role in the milestone run for Bafana Bafana, the national team, at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The national team secured its place in the World Cup knockout round after earning a draw against Czechia and defeating South Korea in the group stage. South Africa’s advance to the Round of 32 marked the first time the men’s national team had progressed beyond the group stage at a World Cup. The team was knocked out by Canada on June 28.
Adams played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches during the 2026 World Cup.
He suffered a personal loss during South Africa’s World Cup campaign. South African Football Association (SAFA) said in a June 27 statement that his grandmother, Marianna, died at age 72. She passed away the day before South Africa faced Czechia on June 18.
"This is a massive loss for Jayden's family, friends and relatives and we join in mourning the loss of his grandmother. We as SAFA offer our deepest condolences and may her soul Rest in Peace," SAFA president Danny Jordaan said in the June press release.
Soccer Community Mourns Jayden Adams
On Saturday, McKenzie released a statement saying, “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25."
McKenzie also noted the impact of Adams’ grandmother’s death on him, writing, “I will always remember watching Bafana’s match against Czechia in Atlanta. I recall noting how unusually quiet Jayden seemed on the bench in the second half…it was only afterwards that we learnt he had taken to the field that day carrying the fresh grief of losing his grandmother, Marianna, who passed away only hours before kick-off.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also issued a statement on Adams' death, saying “It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at Fifa and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”
The South African Football Players Union wrote in an X post: "It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa."
Bafana Bafana wrote in a Saturday X post, “South African football mourn the loss of a talented player whose passion, dedication, and love for the beautiful game inspired many. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, teammates, and everyone affected by this devastating loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace. You will never be forgotten, Jayden.”
