Meleek Thomas Looked Ready for the Pros in Summer League Debut
Meleek Thomas didn’t leave Las Vegas with a win, but he walked off the floor looking like someone who already understands the game in the NBA.
The Cleveland Cavaliers rookie turned in one of the more polished guard performances of opening day despite his team’s 99-93 loss to the Indiana Pacers. Thomas, the No. 34 overall pick after one season at Arkansas, never looked rattled, so matter what happened.
That wisdom stood out almost immediately.
During the matchup, he stayed under control, let the game unfold and consistently made smart decisions with the ball in his hands. There wasn’t any unnecessary rushing or forcing the action just because it was Summer League and everyone was watching and wanting to see fireworks.

He had good numbers and highlights, too. In 27 minutes, Thomas committed zero turnovers while directing the offense and making several sharp decisions.
The rest of the box score wasn’t too shabby either.

Thomas finished with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal, showing he could contribute across the board without sacrificing efficiency or composure. The scoring was important, but the control he played with may have been the bigger takeaway. Guards who protect the basketball while still creating offense tend to earn trust pretty quickly. That’s what he did, too.
The 2026 NBA Summer League runs from July 9 through July 19 in Las Vegas, featuring all 30 NBA teams across 76 games at Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion. Thomas’ debut wasn’t super flashy, and that’s part of what made it so encouraging. He looked comfortable, stayed in command and played like someone who understood what it takes to be a reliable NBA player.
