United States Dealt Harsh Reality After Early World Cup Exit
The United States looked like a team poised to make a run in the World Cup, something American fans aren’t accustomed to seeing.
Instead, the U.S. men’s national team faltered on the biggest stage, losing 4-1 to a Belgium side that looked ready to exit the tournament when faced with a quality opponent. After entering the match as the betting favorite, the USMNT looked nothing like the class team that won its group and was ousted in the Round of 16 by Belgium once again – just like 2014.
After its early exit, ESPN gave the USMNT a “C” grade for its performance, mainly due to its disastrous performance against Belgium after strong group play.

“This was worse than anything we’ve seen at this stage in a long time. Belgium utterly dominated the Americans in every phase of the game from start to finish. The 2022 loss to the Netherlands at least saw the USMNT outshoot and out-possess its opponent,” ESPN wrote.
“The same was true in the round-of-16 defeats against Ghana in 2010 and Germany in 2002. Those were all games decided largely by the randomness of the ball going into the goal — not any kind of systematic dominance applied to the Americans.”
The United States hasn’t advanced further than the Round of 16 since 2002 when the team lost 1-0 to Germany in the quarterfinals.
