Are The Minnesota Timberwolves Trading For Ja Morant?

NBA fans are convinced we're going to see a backcourt of Anthony Edwards and Ja Morant next season?

The Minnesota Timberwolves shocked the NBA community on Monday night by trading All-Star forward Julius Randle and the 28th pick in this year's draft to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team deal that also involved the Chicago Bulls. As part of this deal, the Timberwolves received the 33rd pick and the Bulls acquired Nic Claxton.

"Timberwolves free up significant salary with the remaining two years of Randle's deal, giving them more flexibility to retain Ayo Dosunmu and use exceptions," ESPN's Shams Charania said. "Nets acquire a three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA forward in Randle into their cap space - plus a first-rounder. Chicago uses part of its space on a talented athletic center, a position of need, with $30 million in room left."

After this deal was announced Monday night, Timberwolves fans started speculating about what's next. Let's just say a good portion of the sports world expects Minnesota to call the Memphis Grizzlies and ask about Morant.

"Last week, we reported here on @ClutchPoints how the Timberwolves had been exploring trade packages involving Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo's contract, and the 28th pick," Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints wrote. "Now, MIN frees up significant cap space to build around Anthony Edwards, possibly to target Ja Morant."

"Yeah Ja Morant coming to timberwolves confirmed with this move," a fan commented.

"I'm fully convinced this is a salary dump to trade for Ja Morant," another fan said. "I doubt Minny would make a push this late for Giannis."

For what it's worth, The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski mentioned the Timberwolves as a suitor for Morant.

Maybe a change of scenery is what Morant needs.

Unfortunately, Morant's production has dipped dramatically over the past few years. He went from averaging 27.4 points per game during the 2021-22 season to averaging 19.5 points per game this past season.

It's possible that Morant has reached his ceiling and needs a different supporting cast around him.

With that being said, Morant wouldn't need to be "the guy" in Minnesota. The former Rookie of the Year could pick and choose his spots when the offense isn't running through Edwards.

Are the Timberwolves comfortable with Morant's baggage though? Only time will tell.
