Duke's Jon Scheyer Is Reportedly Being Eyed For NBA Coaching Vacancy

In an interesting turn of events, Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer has emerged as a candidate for an NBA job.

Scheyer has been Duke's head coach since the 2022-23 season, owning a 124-25 record and a Final Four appearance. Though he's still searching for his first national title as a coach, he's done enough to land on an NBA team's radar.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks want to give Scheyer "every conceivable opportunity" to consider their coaching vacancy.

The Mavericks parted ways with Jason Kidd in May in what team president Masai Ujiri called a "very tough decision."

"Being transparent with everybody, I think a new slate was a good way to look at this," Ujiri said. "I feel sometimes in this organization we needed clarity in where we're going. We need to really work in one direction and how we build this team and how we create winning."

There's a clear connection between Scheyer and the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are currently led by Cooper Flagg, the reigning Rookie of the Year. Prior to becoming a star in Dallas, he had an incredible one-year stint at Duke.

If Scheyer is interested in making the jump from college to the pros, reuniting with Flagg makes a ton of sense.

For what it's worth, Scheyer had nothing but good things to say about the Mavericks when they drafted Flagg last summer.

"To me, it's a dream spot. I really feel that way," Scheyer said. "He's not going to go into Dallas thinking he's got all the answers. He's going to learn from Kyrie, he's going to learn from [Davis]. He's going to learn from Derek Lively and Jason Kidd and his staff. He's coming in to learn, and I think that's a special part about him."

Do you think the Mavericks have a legit chance of landing Scheyer?
