Washington Huskies' Danny Sprinkle adds DeAndre Haynes to staff

Coach Danny Sprinkle added DeAndre Haynes to his University of Washington men's basketball staff, the school announced Friday.

Haynes, 42, spent the past five years as an assistant at Marquette and had stints at Maryland (2019-21) and Michigan (2017-19).

The Detroit native was at Toledo during the 2016-17 season and made his coaching debut at his alma mater Kent State, where he spent four seasons (2012-16).

The former star point guard played four years (2002-06) at KSU and left as the program's career leader in assists (625) and steals (229).

During his senior season, Haynes became the first player in school history to receive the MAC Player of the Year award while leading the Golden Flashes to conference regular-season and tournament titles as well as a 2006 NCAA tournament berth.

Haynes played professionally for six years in FIBA Europe, which included stints in Belgium, Hungary, Germany and Finland.

Haynes joins a depleted UW staff that includes associate coach Andy Hill and assistants Quincy Pondexter and Abdul Gaddy.

The Huskies lost assistants DeMarlo Slocum, who left the team, and Tommy Connor, who retired. Jerry Hobbie, who spent the past nine years at Washington and was a special assistant to the head coach last season, is no longer with the team.

It's the second straight year Sprinkle has dealt with a staff shakeup.

Last year, assistant Tony Bland left for Kansas and the Huskies elevated former UW standout guard Gaddy, who was a player development coach, to fill the vacancy.
