Why England's Halftime Talk Changed Everything Against Croatia
For one half, England and Croatia delivered the kind of soccer game American fans generally dream of - lots of offense.
That definitely wasn't England's dream, and head coach Thomas Tuchel wanted to do something about his team's 2-2 halftime deadlock on Wednesday. England and Croatia simply traded goals for the first half of Wednesday's World Cup Group L game in Arlington, Texas.
Tuchel exhorted his team at halftime, and it was powerful enough for players to talk about it afterward with the media. His speech worked on the field as England put away Croatia in the second half 4-2.
“I had more the impression we have to protect something now, got punished for it, which is psychologically not easy, but I loved the reaction after halftime,” Tuchel told reporters afterward on Wednesday. “We encouraged them to go for it, to play with more courage, to be brave, to be ourselves and, like I said, I loved the reaction.”
England star Harry Kane, who had the first goal of the match, described that speech, which changed the trajectory of the game. Kane had both England's first half goals but the scoring came from elsewhere, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford, in the second half.
“Credit to the manager. The manager gave us a speech at halftime, just to say if we lose we lose, but we lose in our way,” Kane told ITV. “You saw that the way we came out in the second half, we came out full gas."
Bellingham's goal came right away in the second half, and England kept Croatia at bay for the rest of the match. Rashford's insurance goal late in the game helped, but England looks poised to win at that point regardless.
"They couldn’t live with it and that’s the level we have to set every game. Credit to everyone," Kane said about his teammates' reaction. "The first game of the tournament. A great result against a tough side.”
If England keeps playing that way, the rest of Group L and possibly the whole Knockout Bracket won't want to live with the British on the opposite side of the field. England travels to New England next to play Ghana on June 23 in Foxboro.
