F1 Announces Punishment For Kimi Antonelli At Barcelona-Catalunya GP

Kimi Antonelli's challenging Spain visit weekend got another twist after Formula 1 stewards confirmed a post-race penalty for the Mercedes driver after the Barcelona-Catalunya GP.

The Italian came into Spain with the title on his shoulders and a sixth consecutive win in mind, but instead had one of the most difficult weekends of his young F1 career. Antonelli fought hard for a lot of the race but was forced to retire due to a late electrical failure, just a few laps from the finish, in a podium position.

The retirement wasn't enough as the FIA later announced that Antonelli had received a five-second time penalty for four instances of over-tracking. The sanction did not affect his final classification, but it was a setback in a stellar rookie season.

FIA Explains Why Antonelli Was Penalized

The stewards said Antonelli had run past the track four times for no reason, and under the rules of Formula 1, he was given the usual five-second penalty. The FIA admitted that one of the violations was only spotted later in the race, which meant the Mercedes driver was given a warning flag later than he should have been. However, officials decided that the punishment should still be carried out.

Interestingly, if Antonelli had come in second, the penalty could have been a lot more significant. Rather, his retirement was just a matter of the extra five seconds being added to his classified race time.

Lewis Hamilton Capitalizes With Historic Ferrari Victory

Antonelli's afternoon went south, but Lewis Hamilton had one of the most memorable moments of his Ferrari career. The seven-time world champion delivered a perfect drive to win his first race for the Scuderia, ending a 41-race losing streak and making him the oldest winner in Formula 1 since 1970.

Hamilton's victory helped to narrow Antonelli's lead in the championship and helped to give Ferrari a big boost in both championships. A day that was supposed to be another dominant one for Mercedes turned into a day of reliability issues, FIA penalties, and a historic win for one of Formula 1's finest drivers.
