Blue Jays Announce Vladimir Guerrero Jr. News After 2 Missed Games
The Toronto Blue Jays had an opportunity to salvage a split against the New York Yankees on Sunday. Instead, they left Rogers Centre with a series defeat.
Toronto dropped its second straight game to New York, falling 8-3 in the series finale. The loss sent the Blue Jays to 34-38 on the season, leaving them further behind in the American League standings.
For the second consecutive day, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was not in the lineup because of back tightness. Guerrero had played through the issue during Friday's series opener, but the five-time All-Star was ruled out on Saturday and remained unavailable throughout the weekend.
After Sunday's disappointing loss, Schneider offered an encouraging update.
According to The Athletic's Mitch Bannon, Schneider said Guerrero's back was feeling better and that the first baseman was preparing to hit if an opportunity arose in the ninth inning.
The update suggests the Blue Jays avoided a more serious setback, although Schneider stopped short of guaranteeing Guerrero's availability for the club's next game.
Updates from John Schneider postgame:
— Mitch Bannon (@MitchBannon) June 14, 2026
- Vladdy's back felt better, was gonna hit in the 9th
- Gimenez's wrist impacts him more hitting > fielding, "off day should be good" for him
- Sounds like there's a shot Yimi Garcia joins the #BlueJays in Boston, though nothing certain there
Even amid an unusually quiet offensive season, Guerrero remains one of Toronto's most dangerous hitters and the face of the franchise. He is batting .280 with a .372 on-base percentage across 68 games, and while he has recorded just three home runs and 27 RBIs, he is still one of the most feared hitters in MLB at his best.
The Blue Jays felt his absence against the Yankees, scoring just four runs across the final two games of the series.
Toronto opens a new series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday, and it is unclear if Guerrero will be available to play.
The schedule does not get any easier for the Blue Jays. Toronto opens a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, winners of two straight games, at home. After that, the Blue Jays head on the road for a challenging series against the Chicago Cubs.
