Wenatchee Valley soccer fans ready for World Cup

With Seattle hosting matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, soccer fans throughout the Wenatchee Valley are eagerly anticipating the tournament's arrival in the Pacific Northwest.

The tournament will bring some of the world's biggest soccer stars to Seattle and other host cities across North America.

One of those fans is Dayden Núñez, who practiced kicking goals while wearing a Mexico jersey and Cristiano Ronaldo-themed Portugal shorts. He didn't hesitate when asked which team he would be supporting.

"I like seeing Ronaldo play in his last World Cup because he will retire after," Núñez said. "I'm excited, hopefully they win."

For younger fans like Núñez, the tournament could provide one of the final opportunities to watch stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi compete on soccer's biggest stage. Eight players aged 40 and older are expected to participate in the tournament.

While some fans are hoping to see Mexico lift the trophy, several local supporters believe France enters the tournament as one of the favorites.

A longtime soccer fan, A.R. Rodríguez, will have an opportunity to attend matches in Seattle during the tournament.

"This is going to be my first time, so I'm really, really excited," Rodríguez said.

When asked who he thought would win, Rodríguez stayed analytical.

"I would like to say Mexico, but I don't think it will be possible. But I think France will be."

France emerged as the most common pick among those interviewed.

"In my heart I hope it's Mexico, but we all know that's probably not gonna happen," said local social media influencer Juan Sanchez. "I think I have my money on France winning it this year."

Sanchez said having World Cup matches in Seattle could help grow the sport throughout the region.

"It's super exciting, it's the first time it's been in the USA in forever and honestly having Seattle be one of the hosts of the World Cup is gonna be awesome."
