Aroldis Chapman Wants an Apology From Yankees GM Brian Cashman
The writing appears to be on the wall for pitcher Aroldis Chapman and the Boston Red Sox.
With a 27-39 record, Boston sits in last place in the AL East, and some trades appear to be in the team's future. Chapman is still a valuable reliever, and many expect the Red Sox to deal him to a contending team sometime between now and the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
And while it's highly unlikely Boston would deal him within the division, there's still a small chance the 38-year-old lefty could reunited with the New York Yankees, who are one game behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East.
If Chapman does find himself back in the Bronx, he made it clear he's going to need an apology before he lets go of the grudge he's clearly still holding for how things went down in his final season with the Yankees.
"What happened, happened," Chapman said. "If something like this were to happen (being traded back to New York), I believe someone from this organization should apologize first."
Chapman then clarified that by "someone," he meant Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
Some don’t blame Chapman for still harboring some hard feelings. During the 2022 American League Division Series, Chapman was left off the team's playoff roster because he missed a mandatory team practice, though he maintained that he had permission to do so. Cashman insisted he was at fault.
That offseason Chapman departed the Bronx and signed with the Kansas City Royals, and since he's had stints with the Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Red Sox.
Chapman's tenure with the Yankees was a fruitful one. He logged 153 saves, 453 strikeouts, a 2.94 ERA, and a 1.14 WHIP while earning three All-Star selections.
He posted 32 saves with a 1.17 ERA last year with the Red Sox, and through 20 appearances this year he's racked up 13 saves with a 0.46 ERA.
