David Peterson Shares Blunt Message After Allowing Six Runs in Mets Loss

New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson is coming off one of his toughest outings this season.

In the team's 9-2 Wednesday loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, he pitched just 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits, six earned runs, two home runs and recording just one strikeout. It is the fifth time this year that the 30-year-old veteran has allowed five or more earned runs in an appearance this season.

That loss dropped New York to 29-38 on the season, keeping them in fifth place in the National League East. It's been a difficult year as a whole for Peterson, who is set to become a free agent after the season.

However, Peterson isn't ready to just give up on the season. When speaking to reporters after the game, the lefty emphasized the importance of patience and perseverance within a 162-game season.

"I think sometimes it's just part of baseball, you know, have some good ones, you have some bad ones," Peterson said. "I think it takes a long time to have a good year, so take it one day at a time and then, you know, you can fully evaluate the season itself at the end of the year."

In 14 games and seven starts this season, he has accumulated 61 innings, a 5.75 ERA, 71 ERA+ and a 1.639 WHIP. The one-time All-Star is allowing an opponent slash line of .294/.361/.421 and a .782 OPS.

However, he will have the opportunity to bounce back soon. FanGraphs lists Peterson as the probable starter when the Mets open up a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
