Victor Wembanyama Sends Defiant Message After Embarrassing Game 4 Loss

The San Antonio Spurs made NBA history (not the good kind) in a Game 4 loss to the New York Knicks.

After opening a 29-point lead, San Antonio watched as New York managed to make the largest comeback in NBA Finals history en route to a 107-106 lead and a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Despite the embarrassing loss, Wembanyama isn’t ready to give up just yet.

“What’s going through my mind right now?” Wembanyama said. “I think it’s going to go one of two ways: a bad one and a good one. The bad one would be giving up. The good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together. I know this is what we’re going to do.”

A common refrain from this NBA Finals is the Spurs’ ability to take a lead in the first quarter, but eventually squander said lead.

Through the first four games of the series, San Antonio owns a point differential of plus-47 in the first quarter and has owned double-digit leads in every game of this series but has been able to maintain one only once in Game 3. Even still, Wembanyama belies the Spurs are built for moments like this.

“We’ve proven we can surpass these difficulties,” Wembanyama said. “Even though we haven’t been there before, I’m convinced we’re built that way and we’re going to use the better of this. It’s going to tighten us up.”

Game 5 tips off on Saturday, June 13.
