Myles Garrett Contract Details Have NFL Fans in an Uproar

When the Los Angeles Rams traded for edge-rusher Myles Garrett last week, the deal turned the NFL world on its head.

The Rams were already considered a Super Bowl favorite, but Garrett's addition has the team as the betting favorite on just about every sportsbook in circulation.

Then on Wednesday, Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac tweeted out details of Garrett's contract and it contained one eyebrow-raising detail.

"Myles Garrett signed a 5-year, $208.2 million restructured contract with the #Rams that includes $37M fully guaranteed in 2026, & $99M through the 2028 season," Ginnitti wrote on X. "The deal includes a signing bonus, 8 option bonuses, & 8 void years for cap purposes."

The eight void years L.A. included in Garrett's deal caused quite a commotion on social media, most notably because the max limit on void years for NFL teams is four years. However, the Rams were able to pull of their circumvention of that rule by getting creative with his signing bonus structuring.

Teams typically can't dole out bonuses over more than five years, the Rams were able to skirt around that by giving Garrett annual option bonuses, which are prorated by the current year plus the remaining years on the life of the contract. Those future bonus options trigger additional void years.

L.A.'s bypassing the four season void year rule had many NFL fans enraged on social media.

"At some point the NFL have to put a limit on void years….," one fan exclaimed.

"Can someone explain to me how these void years work and why there is no limit???? what's the point of the cap if you can just do [expletive] like this…..???" another fan scoffed.

"8 void years? Is there no limit to the number of void years allowed? Why not just add 100 void years?" a third fan protested.

"Ah yes 8 void years… wtf are we even doing anymore!?" one user sneered.

"The cap might as well not exist if you can have 8 void years on a 5 year deal," another user noted.

"8 void years I'm genuinely shaking," a third user replied.

"2 Presidencies of void years is crazy," another fan wrote.

"Shit says 8 void years??? You can do whatever the hell you want in the NFL man😂😂😂," one user quipped.
