Connecticut Sun Announce Unfortunate Brittney Griner Decision After 1 Missed Game
The Connecticut Sun provided an unfortunate update on veteran center Brittney Griner ahead of Wednesday night's matchup against the Toronto Tempo.
According to the team's official injury report, Griner has been ruled out with a left rib strain, marking her second consecutive missed game as she continues to recover from the injury. The update comes as a disappointing development for a Connecticut team that has leaned heavily on the former WNBA champion and Olympic gold medalist throughout the 2026 season.
The Sun announced the decision Wednesday afternoon, confirming Griner would not be available against Toronto after also sitting out the team's previous contest.

Another Setback for Connecticut
Griner joined Connecticut ahead of the 2026 season after spending last year with the Atlanta Dream. The 6-foot-9 center arrived with an impressive resume that includes a WNBA championship, multiple All-Star appearances and three Olympic gold medals. She was expected to serve as one of the franchise's veteran leaders during a transitional period for the organization.
While the Sun have battled through a difficult start to the season, Griner's presence has remained important on both ends of the floor. Her size, rim protection and scoring ability give Connecticut a unique dimension whenever she's on the floor.
That's why Wednesday's injury update is particularly frustrating for the franchise as it looks to build momentum during the early portion of the schedule.
Sun Hoping for Quick Return
At this point, Connecticut has not provided a timetable for Griner's return beyond listing her as out with the rib strain. Rib injuries can be tricky for basketball players, especially for post players who routinely absorb contact around the basket.
The good news for the Sun is that the injury does not appear to be a long-term concern based on the team's current designation.
For now, Connecticut will once again need other players to step up in Griner's absence as the Sun prepare to take on the Tempo. The organization and its fans will undoubtedly be hoping Wednesday is one of the final games Griner is forced to watch from the sidelines.
