Is a Haney vs. Stevenson megafight up next?
False alarm, everybody. Back to what you were doing.
Boxing fans had an exciting afternoon on Tuesday after Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson appeared to negotiate and agree to a megafight live on social media, only to pull out of it just minutes later.
The pair caused quite a buzz, but anyone who has been following the business side of the sport knew that the chances of a fight negotiated on Twitter actually coming to fruition were slim.
Not that it has never happened before.
Ryan Garcia famously trolled Gervonta Davis on social media to get Davis to give him a shot. Terrence Crawford vs Canelo Alvarez also started as a social media discussion that turned into an interview question that eventually turned into a Netflix megafight.
And it isnt like this fight is even as unfathomable as the Crawford vs. Canelo fight was (due to the difference in weight classes). Not only should this fight happen, but it should also have happened already.
But this is boxing, where politics and allegiances often come ahead of what makes sense in the ring.
Haney and Stevenson got deep enough into negotiations that they even agreed to fight at a 144 lb catchweight, meeting in the middle since Shakur has never fought above 140 lbs and Devin Haney is currently campaigning at 147 lbs.
But the fight was never going to happen now for the same reason this matchup didn't feel like a viable one when Mike Coppinger reported that the two were in negotiations weeks ago.
Devin Haney vs Shakur Stevenson won't happen right now because of the money
Devin Haney is still in line for a lucrative rematch against Ryan Garcia. The value of that fight goes down if Haney loses before they step back in the ring together, and while Haney can't bubble wrap himself until the rematch, he can limit his exposure to a fighter like Stevenson, who is one of the most heralded in the game.
When Coppinger reported this fight the last time, Ryan Garcia was one of the first people to hop online and throw cold water on the rumor. Back then, Garcia didn't have an opponent lined up. But reportedly, WBC welterweight champion Garcia is working on a low-risk fight of his own against the UK's Conor Benn for later this summer.
Garcia has a stake in seeing Devin Haney remain undefeated until they meet in the ring again. So by dinner time, Stevenson and Haney had come back to their senses, and Haney capitulated that a fight with Shakur wasn't happening anytime soon.
Instead, Haney looks like he is gearing up to face Keyshawn Davis, whom the WBO recently named as the top contender for Haney's welterweight title.
"Whenever you decide to come to my weight class lets do it! I'll fight your brother Keyshawn for now," Haney reportedly said, though that tweet has since been deleted.
Keyshawn Davis and Shakur Stevenson are notoriously good friends outside of the ring, and Keyshawn Davis went live on Instagram to show just how excited he is to get a crack at the welterweight champ.
While the fight right now probably isn't real, the excitement boxing fans got from the little social media show was. This is a fight they want, but probably won't get anytime soon.
