Jarvis, Hurricanes best Golden Knights in OT, tie Stanley Cup Final 1-1

June 4 (UPI) -- Seth Jarvis uncaged a white-hot one-timer, sending the puck past Carter Hart's stick side and leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a comeback, 4-3 overtime win against the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hurricanes trailed 2-0 through two periods, despite holding a shot advantage. They finally broke through with three goals in the third frame and then Jarvis' heroic effort 3:56 into overtime to avoid an 0-2 deficit in the best-of-seven game title series, which is now tied.

"Just making the right plays -- playing smart and being aggressive and it worked out," Jarvis said on the ABC broadcast.

The Hurricanes nearly mirrored the Game 1 effort of their visitors, who trailed 2-0 before storming back to steal the series opener Tuesday in Raleigh. The Golden Knights temporarily spoiled Carolina's comeback effort in Game 2 when forward Mark Stone found the net with 1:21 remaining in regulation. But Jarvis had the final word with his power-play score.

"It was a lot," Jarvis said of the momentum swings. "We did a great job of controlling our emotions. We never got too high, never got to low. We just kept responding. That's what I love about this group is that we always bounce back."

The Hurricanes outshot Las Vegas 15-11 through two periods. The Golden Knights held a 14-8 edge in the third. The Hurricanes outshot the visitors 3-1 in overtime.

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere registered two assists in the victory. Forwards Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski and Jordan Staal scored the Hurricanes' third-period goals.

Golden Knights forward Brett Howden, the leading scorer this postseason, netted the first goal of Game 2 with 6:27 remaining in the first period. He doubled the Golden Knights lead 7:23 into the second.

The Hurricanes finally broke through when Stankoven beat Hart with 9:40 remaining in regulation. Jankowski lit the lamp 2:26 later to tie the score. Staal, the Hurricanes' captain, tipped in a shot off a power play to give the Hurricanes their first lead with 4:35 remaining.

Stone tied the game again with a backhanded shot past Hurricanes goalie Frederik Anderson with 81 seconds remaining, which led to overtime.

Forward Sebastian Aho skated along the right boards at the start of the game's final sequence. He then peeled back, finding Gostisbehere near the blue line. The defenseman slid a pass into the left circle. Jarvis pulled back his stick blade and awaited the puck before rifling his one-timer into the left side of the net, just past Hart's stick.

With the victory, the Hurricanes snapped the Golden Knights' seven-game winning streak. Carolina held a 46-25 advantage in hits in Game 2. Las Vegas blocked 25 shots, compared to the Hurricanes' 11.

Hart totaled 22 saves in the loss. Anderson made 23 stops for the Hurricanes. Each team unleashed 26 shots in Game 2.

The Golden Knights will host the Hurricanes in Game 3 at 8 p.m. EDT Saturday in Las Vegas. Game 4 will be Tuesday in Las Vegas.
