WFAN Host Declares NBA Finals Are 'Over' After Game 1
For the first time in decades, the New York Knicks have the lead in an NBA Finals thanks to some heroics from Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1. For one WFAN host, that upset at the Frost Bank Center was all he needed to see to make a decision on how the series will go.
Last night on WFAN, Tommy Lugauer declared that the Knicks are "unstoppable" and that it's their "destiny" to win the NBA Finals now. Lugauer remarked that their ability to turn deficits into double-digit leads is unlike anything he's ever seen and he's beyond certain that the team will win it all now.
"The Knicks are unstoppable," Lugauer said. "They are a force; the likes we have never seen in this town. This is a historical… They won by double digits! They won by double digits! This game was tied about two minutes ago! They were down 14 in the third quarter! And they won by double digits!
"They are not going to be stopped! This is destiny. This is something that we've all waited for, for a lifetime. And it's going to happen! Put your feet up, kick back, relax, enjoy this with your family, enjoy this with your loved ones. Stop being nervous! Stop being worried! Stop it!
"The sports gods and the basketball gods have given us this gift! Enjoy it! Enjoy it! Because I am! I am basking in the glory of it! My bank account's looking a hell of a lot better; thank you very much! My fandom is just bathing in this! And my cockiness and arrogance is… Now I'm at a 20 out of 10. That's where I'm at."
Confidence in NYC
Lugauer may be one of the louder voices in New York but he's far from the only one who is enjoying a newfound level of confidence right now. Fans took to the comments to echo his sentiment and share their own confidence levels:
"Call them all out Tommy. Name drop all of them. Rip them. Rip their basketball knowledge. They have none," one Knicks fan declared.
"Knicks winning for certain been was telling people," wrote another.
"World champs," a third said bluntly.
Teams that win Game 1 of the NBA Finals historically have a 70-percent chance of winning the entire series. Of course, that also means they have a 30-percent chance of losing the series too.
Game 2 on Friday might give us the clearer view of whether the Knicks are a team of destiny or if they maybe got a few lucky breaks. Teams that start a series 2-0 win over 85-percent of NBA Finals games. That said, we've seen teams blow a lead like that twice in the last 10 years.
Simply put, there's plenty more basketball to play.
