Finnish Ski Resort Hides $23,000 Worth of Gold for Summer-Long Treasure Hunt

Fancy a treasure hunt? You might want to put June 18, 2026, on the calendar.

That's when Levi, a Finnish ski resort, plans to kick off an event with a unique prize: a gold nugget worth €20,000, or about $23,000. A pair of skis or a season pass would be nice, but we've gotta say, gold sounds even better.

The hunt, which begins at Levi Visitor Center, will take visitors through the resort's trails, landmarks, and local services.

Along the way, they'll find clues and leads that point towards the gold. Levi, in a news release, noted that "While the prize can be found after any clue, each new clue released during the summer makes the location easier to identify."

The final hint will drop on August 22, making the adventure, called the Midnight Sun Hunt, a summer-long affair-unless some enterprising searchers manage to track down the prize early, of course.

The name refers to Levi's northerly location. Perched just inside the Arctic Circle, the ski resort sees flashes of the northern lights overhead and, during the warmer months, exceptionally long days. It seems Levi is hoping the Midnight Sun Hunt will make visitors see why the area's special, aside from just the skiing.

"Levi is known above all for its winter, but the northern summer is still undiscovered by many. We want to give travelers a new reason to visit Levi when the sun never sets, and the fell landscape reveals a completely different side of itself," said Satu Pesonen, CEO of Visit Levi, in the release.

Fittingly, the event was put together in collaboration with Agnico Eagle Finland, a subsidiary of the Canadian gold-mining company Agnico Eagle Mines.

The organizers of the hunt asked participants to stay within permitted areas, respect nature and follow responsible outdoor practices. They said that finding the gold won't involve any digging or disturbing the terrain, so you can leave the shovel and excavator at home.
