Rudy Gobert Gets Honest About Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Reaching NBA Finals

At 22, Victor Wembanyama is headed to his first NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs, as they’ll battle the New York Knicks in a highly anticipated best-of-seven game series.

Rudy Gobert witnessed the size and talent of his fellow Frenchman firsthand over the past three seasons and in this recent postseason, as the Spurs defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 4-2.

With that, Gobert opened up about how good Wemby has been thus far in his career, and what impresses him most about the former No. 1 pick.

“It doesn’t surprise me because I know him, I know his mentality, I know the work he puts in at all levels … So it’s not really so much that what he does is incredible,” Gobert said.

He marveled at Wemby making his NBA Finals debut, something Gobert has yet to do during his 13-year career, which has included time with the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Gobert praised the young San Antonio Spurs for playing like a team that’s been in the NBA for three or four years already.

“That’s where you say in terms of an organization, they do a hell of a job,” he told RTL France, per Spurs reporter Dusty Garza. “You feel like they’re a family, and you can feel it on the court. You really feel like they’re a team without egos.”

Throughout their seven-game Western Conference Finals battle with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Spurs received standout contributions from various players beyond Wembanyama. In Game 7, Wemby had 22, but Julian Champagnie also stepped up with 20 points, including hitting 6 of 10 of his 3s.

Stephon Castle and Devin Vassel, both younger than 22, have also been early rising stars for the Spurs, after getting selected in the top four of the NBA Draft.

It speaks volumes about the Spurs organization that they can assemble such high-level players who not only have a lot of talent on the basketball court but also the maturity and poise to play together as a team.

They now seek the common goal of winning the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy early in their careers. Game 1 tips off on Wednesday, with coverage starting at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC and ESPN.
