Corey Seager Injury Update Emerges After 16 Missed Games

Corey Seager has been one of the Texas Rangers' most important players since arriving on a 10-year, $325 million contract. But his absence has been felt during a season that has not gone according to plan for the club.

Seager was placed on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation, retroactive to May 15, after missing a three-game series against the Houston Astros because of back spasms that had been building for days.

Seager has struggled throughout the season. At the time of the injury, he was slashing .179/.286/.353 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs through 42 games, including an 0-for-27 stretch. Manager Skip Schumaker made it clear the Rangers were not willing to risk a more serious issue.

But the recovery process has not moved as quickly as Texas hoped. Schumaker revealed last week that Seager's progress had stalled, delaying plans for live pitching despite no formal setback being reported.

By Friday, however, the outlook had improved, with Seager back to swinging. He also facing live pitching on Saturday, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.

Now, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Seager and outfielder Wyatt Langford are scheduled to appear in a rehab game for Double-A Frisco on Tuesday against Springfield.

A rehab assignment is the final step before returning to the Rangers' lineup. If Seager's back responds well and he completes the assignment without issue, a return sometime during the week appears realistic.

A healthy Seager would be a significant boost for a lineup searching for production. The five-time All-Star entered the season with a career .290 batting average, more than 200 home runs and an OPS above .870. He is also one of the few players in MLB history to win multiple World Series MVP awards.

The Rangers enter Tuesday at 28-31, 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. A weekend sweep of the Kansas City Royals helped improve the club's record as they now prepare for a three-game road series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Nathan Eovaldi is scheduled to start Tuesday's opener against Dustin May, with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m. ET. The division remains within reach, and Seager's return will certainly improve the Rangers' chances.
