Clatskanie softball advances to state semifinals

For the past three years, the Tigers have been eliminated in the state quarterfinals. However, this season, they finally broke through and advanced to the semifinals after beating Country Christian/North Clackamas Christian 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2A/1A Softball State Championship at home on Friday.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Joey Sizemore hit a walk-off single to give Clatskanie the victory.

Sizemore hit a walk-off single and struck out 11 batters in the Tigers' 5-4 win over Country Christian/North Clackamas Christian in the state quarterfinals on Friday, May 29.

The Tigers went ahead 2-0 in the first inning thanks to an error caused by contact from Addy Wemmer and a sacrifice fly from Olivia George. The Cougars tied the game at 2-2 in the top of third before Clatskanie took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from George.

Country Christian/North Clackamas tied the game once more in the top of the sixth, but the Tigers took the lead back in the bottom of the period when George scored on a passed ball. The Cougars pulled even once again in the top of the seventh before Sizemore's game-winning single.

McKinsey Doyle led the Tigers with three hits while Sizemore and George each had two. Kennedy Johnson finished with one hit.

Sizemore pitched for all seven innings, striking out 11 batters while giving away five hits and 3 earned runs.

The Tigers (19-8) will hit the road to face Heppner/Ione in the state semifinals at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Heppner High School.
