Chet Holmgren Makes Unfortunate NBA History in Game 7 Loss to Spurs
The Oklahoma City Thunder fell 111-103 to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.
Back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a game-high 35 points, but it wasn’t enough. A major factor in Oklahoma City’s defeat was the lack of offensive production from All-Star Chet Holmgren.
Holmgren struggled throughout the series while matched up against Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, but his struggles were especially evident in Game 7. He finished with just four points while attempting only two shots, neither of which came in the second half as he virtually disappeared from the Thunder’s offense.
According to NBA analyst Evan Sidery, Holmgren became the first player in NBA postseason history to attempt two or fewer shots while playing at least 30 minutes in a Game 7. He also went 31 consecutive minutes without attempting a field goal.

Despite the struggles, Gilgeous-Alexander came to Holmgren’s defense during the Thunder’s end-of-season exit interviews, making it clear that Oklahoma City still views Holmgren as a vital piece of its future.
"I haven't talked to Chet about that. I won't. I don't feel like I need to," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "I didn't perform my greatest this series either. Chet won't come to me with a development plan for the summer, you know? Chet knows how much I care about this game. I know how much Chet loves this game.
"He's going to be a better player because of his makeup and his talent. I don't need to umbrella Chet. He'll figure it out."
