Cunningham in the WNBA

Sophie Cunningham has built a reputation as one of the WNBA's toughest and most competitive guards since entering the league in 2019. A standout at the University of Missouri, Cunningham was selected 13th overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury. She spent her first six seasons in Phoenix, developing into a reliable three-point shooter and versatile wing player while helping the Mercury reach the 2021 WNBA Finals.

Ahead of the 2025 season, she was traded to the Indiana Fever, where she became a fan favorite thanks to her physical play, leadership, and floor spacing alongside stars such as Caitlin Clark.

Through the 2025 season, Cunningham had appeared in more than 210 WNBA games and averaged 7.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.7 steals per game while shooting nearly 37-percent from three-point range and over 86-percent from the free-throw line. Her best statistical seasons came with Phoenix in 2022 and 2023, when she averaged 12.6 and 11.3 points per game, respectively. In 2025, despite suffering a season-ending knee injury, she posted 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while recording career highs in field-goal percentage and three-point percentage.

While Cunningham has not yet earned a WNBA All-Star selection or major league award, she has received recognition as one of the league's top role players and outside shooters. She was frequently mentioned in discussions for the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year award during her time with Phoenix and played a key role on multiple playoff teams.
