1A State Track and Field: Samantha Evans of Columbia-White Salmon takes second in girls high jump
May 28-Samantha Evans of Columbia-White Salmon earned a runner-up finish in the 1A girls high jump and Tiffany Sheldon of Seton Catholic was third in the discus during the first day of the 1A/2B/1B state track and field meet Thursday in Yakima.
Evans was perfect in clearing 5-feet, 5-2 and 5-4, which left her alone in the competition with Kamdin Carlton of Omak.
Carlton was able to clear 5-6 on her third attempt to win the state title. Evans, who set a season best of 5-5 last week at the district meet, went 0 for 3 at 5-6 to take second. Paige Sherry of La Center tied for eighth at 4-10.
Sheldon threw her best mark of 118-8 in the discus on her fourth attempt, but that was well behind state champion Kimberly Beard of King's at 153-5. Riley Seymer of Seton Catholic was seventh at 100-8.
Conley Richardson of Seton Catholic was seventh in the 1,600 (5:12.12).
In the boys meet, Riley Mazza of Kalama placed sixth in the pole vault at 13-0.
